Manchester Topples Triton On Wrestling Mat

The Manchester wrestling team won its final match of the regular season with a 57-15 victory Wednesday at Triton.
The match was Triton’s Senior Night.
“It’s good to wrestle a team like Triton where, even though there were some forfeits, the guys who went out there were competitive,” said Manchester coach Byron Sweet.
The Squires won five matches by forfeit, and was 5-4 in live matches.
“The (forfeits) are gonna be there for the rest of the year,” said Triton coach Matt Arvesen. “That’s just the way it is for our squad. I still feel like everybody’s getting better every week.”
Manchester won by forfeit at 195 pounds to start the match.
The first live match of the night was at 220, with Triton senior Aaron Stichter winning a 4-0 decision.
“I was really proud of our seniors as far as their last chance to be in front of the home crowd,” Arvesen said. “A couple of them went down early, and battled back and won.”
The 285-pound match was briefly halted when Triton senior Billy Smith got sick after drinking too much water, but he valiantly returned to the mat to win a 5-2 decision.
“That kid owes me a steak dinner after cleaning up his mess on the mat,” Arvesen joked.
Smith’s win tied the score at 6. That was the last time the score would be tied as the Squires won 106 and 113 by forfeits before taking a pivotal match at 120.
Manchester’s Brady Wiley and Triton’s Breylon Wareham went back and forth with five lead changes before Wiley pulled off a pin 5:07 into the match.
Wiley, a freshman bumped up from 113 to 120 due to a Manchester injury.
“We told (Wiley) if he was confident and he took his shots he could win, and that’s what he did,” Sweet said.
Manchester’s Dylan Stroud held a 10-2 lead at 126 before winning by fall over Nate Riggins in 4:59.
“That 126 match, I don’t want to sell that short,” Sweet said. “Riggins is a heck of a competitor.”
With a 30-6 lead, the Squires picked up a win by decision at 132.
That was followed by another Squires pin at 138, and Manchester’s wins by forfeit at 145 and 152.
The matches at 160 and 170 were Manchester wins by fall, before long-time competitors Delton Moore, of Manchester, and senior James Snyder, of Triton, faced off one more time at 182.
Snyder held a 2-0 lead after the first period, and pulled off a reversal for the 4-0 advantage.
Moore battled back with two points of his own, but Snyder’s reversal and near fall gave him necessary distance at 9-2.
He won the match by an 11-4 decision.
“I really loved how Snyder went out there and just went right after Delton,” Arvesen said. “They’ve been battling since they were little kids, and it was just kind of symbolic to have them wrestle the last match tonight.”
Triton will wrestle Wednesday at Northfield before competing Saturday in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference Tournament.
Manchester finished its regular season at 18-3.
“Frankly, there’s a couple (losses) in there that we could get back,” Sweet said. “Basically, of the three losses, there’s only one where we got handled, so we really have a lot of excitement about this team.”
