Rumple, Amiss Make Splash For Warsaw

In a way that only he can, Warsaw boys basketball coach Doug Ogle smiled and described the performance of senior Trevor Rumple and junior Wyatt Amiss as a trip down “Splash Mountain.”

In a 67-56 win over Northern Lakes Conference rival Northridge Friday night in the Tiger Den, Rumple and Amiss looked like the home team’s version of the “splash brothers” – a name associated with hot-handed shooters Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors.

Rumple and Amiss combined to shoot 13 of 16 from the field overall, 7 of 10 from three-point range, and 2 of 2 at the charity stripe en route to 35 of Warsaw’s 67 points.

Their effort led a foursome of players in double figures for the Tigers, who improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the NLC.

Rumple scored a game-high 18 points off the bench and added three assists and two steals to his statline, while Amiss made 5 of 7 attempts from the arc en route to 17 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Senior Nolan Groninger tallied 13 points, six assists and four boards, and classmate Tyler Metzinger finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

“Trevor Rumple and Wyatt Amiss took a trip down “Splash Mountain” at the same time,” said Ogle, whose team shot 22 of 36 overall, 8 of 13 from the arc, and 15 of 19 at the free throw line in the 11-point win.

“Their shooting, and then our defense ... we really worked hard this week on making it difficult on (Jackson) Erekson and (Alex) Stauffer. We wanted to get into their shot attempts ... Stauffer only got six shots, and we guarded Erekson pretty well. We set the goal to hold them to 20 (points). Together I think they were averaging 28, and they got 17 tonight.

“Rumple, I’m really happy for him. He started out (the season) hurt, had a big game against Whitko, and then tonight. He played well, and we’re happy with this win in Round 2 of the Northern Lakes Conference.”

Sam Vogt scored 13 points for the Raiders, who fell to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the NLC, while Erekson scored 10 points, Nate Bowman and Carter Stoltzfus eight each, and Stauffer and Sam Smith seven and six, respectively.

The Tigers, who have won six in a row against Northridge and own a 30-6 advantage in the series, led 15-11 after one quarter of play, 28-18 at halftime and 46-37 heading into the final frame.

Warsaw scored the first seven points of the game, never trailed, and didn’t allow the Raiders to get closer than three points over the final 24 minutes of the game.

Northridge cut the deficit to 32-29 in the third quarter, but the Tigers were able to pull away by making 13 of 19 shot attempts in the second half.

The Raiders weren’t nearly as hot-handed as the Tigers.

Northridge was 21 of 53 from the field overall, 10 of 28 from the arc, and 4 of 7 at the charity stripe.

“When we executed, I thought we got good looks,” said first-year Northridge coach Scott Radeker. “I don’t think we shot a great percentage, but we missed a lot of good looks. When we actually ran our stuff and executed, I was pretty happy with the shots that we got.

“There was too many times where one guy was out of position, or we didn’t get the pass there early enough, or we were pushed out a little farther than we wanted to get it. Like I said, I was happy with our execution for that portion of the third quarter, but against a team like this you gotta be able to do it for four quarters.”

Warsaw is 5-0 in the Tiger Den this season and has won 28 of its last 30 NLC games.

Prior to the start of Friday’s game, Warsaw Athletic Director Dave Anson presented Ogle with a commemorative plaque recognizing the Tigers’ four consecutive NLC titles and six over the last eight seasons.

Ogle’s squad then went out and took a step toward another championship.

“We do put a lot of emphasis on these conference games,” said Ogle, who said his players and staff pick winners of conference games each week as a fun way to keep tabs on the other teams.

The 11-point win completed a sweep over Northridge.

On Thursday, the freshman team beat the Raiders on Jackson Dawson’s buzzer beater.

The JV team topped Northridge 47-42 Friday behind Bishop Walters’ 19-point performance.

The Tigers are in action again Friday when they travel to Goshen for an NLC contest, followed by a trip to Fort Wayne Snider the following night.
