Manchester’s boys basketball team jumped out to a 25-2 lead and won 53-33 in a Class 2A Sectional 37 win over Rochester at Oak Hill High School.
“I really liked the team defense the guys were playing,” said Manchester coach Mark Underwood. “To be effective defensively, you can’t just have a bunch of guys out there on islands. You gotta be working together as a group.”
The Squires’ offense wasn’t too shabby, either.
Manchester’s Thane Creager kicked things off with a three-pointer before Rochester’s Braden Perez responded with a bucket.
It would be the last shot the Zebras hit for quite a while.
The Squires nailed three more treys, a bucket, and a pair of free throws to finish the first quarter on a 14-0 run.
Meanwhile, Rochester got just nine shots off in the first quarter.
“In that first half, we were taking shots and we were always off-balanced,” said Rochester coach Rob Malchow. “And that was because we hurried them a little bit, and that was a credit to (Manchester) defensively.”
Manchester carried its momentum into the second quarter, on the strength of back-to-back Weston Hamby three-pointers and a trey by Caleb Stout for the 25-2 advantage.
A three-point play by Kalvary Lingenfelter finally marked more points on the board for the Zebras and put an end to the Squires’ run.
Still, Manchester finished the first half ahead 32-9, and extended its lead to 30 by the end of the third quarter.
Even after the Squires put in their reserves, they still cruised to a 20-point victory.
Manchester was 11 of 22 from the three-point arc.
Hamby hit three three-pointers and led with 14 points, while Creager hit four three-pointers for 12 points and Stout made three treys and finished with 11 points.
Lingenfelter led the Zebras with 12 points. Manchester, and particularly Brayden Casper, held Rochester standout Braden Perez to four points.
“He’s always been a part of what we try to do as far as stopping people,” Underwood said of Perez. “Brayden Casper really stepped up and did a great job on him.”
“It’s just been a process all year, working on the little things, trying to get better,” Underwood said. “But, I gotta give my kids all the credit in the world, because as a coach you can try to coach them up, you can try to tell them what to do, but they’re the ones that have to do it.”
The Squires will face Lewis Cass Friday at 6 p.m. in a sectional semifinal at Oak Hill High School.
If the Squires win, they’ll play in Saturday’s championship.
Manchester has not won a sectional title since one-class basketball in 1995.
