Arrest Made After Scanning Scam At Warsaw Walmart

A Silver Lake woman and an unidentified man allegedly stole over $400 worth of items from Walmart by scanning bar codes from cheaper items for the bigger-ticket items and by attempting to not pay for some items at all.

Shelby Lynne Learned, 27, of 3531 W. Ind. 14, Silver Lake, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 6:38 p.m. Thursday for making a false sales document. Her bond was set at $5,000 surety and $750 cash.

Court documents filed Feb. 13 list the charges against her as four counts of making a false sales document, level 6 felonies, and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

On Jan. 17, Warsaw Police Department officer Jacob Metzger responded to a theft complaint at Walmart. Loss prevention officer Lisa Bronson told him that on Dec. 7 she saw a man and woman attempt to self-check several items using the UPC bar code from items of lesser value. The shopping card they attempted to use was declined, so they left the store without any of the merchandise. Bronson identified the female suspect as Learned, according to the court documents.

On Dec. 21, Bronson saw Learned and the unidentified man enter the store and attempt to scan two camouflage jackets using the UPC bar code from ball caps of lesser value. Learned also was seen scanning dolls and stuffed toys with the bar code from candy. She paid for the items with a Walmart shopping card.

The next day, Learned and the man returned to the store and Learned completed a no-receipt return for the two camouflage jackets and a 77-piece toolkit. She provided identification and was given a $50.99 Walmart shopping card.

After Learned and the man were done shopping, they went to a self-checkout register, where she scanned the bar code from a 97-cent package of stickers to purchase some makeup brushes. The man scanned the bar code from a $1.97 package of cable ties to purchase a pair of jeans. Also in the shopping cart were a jacket, bra and a shaving kit that were never scanned. The shopping card from returning the camouflage jackets was used to pay for the illegally scanned items, court documents state. Learned and the man left Walmart without making any attempt to pay for the items that were not scanned.

On Dec. 23, Learned went to the Walmart service desk and completed a no-receipt return for the bra, shaving kit and makeup brushes she had previously “stolen,” according to court documents. She was given a shopping card for $70.06. She and the man then selected several items and proceeded to a self-checkout register, failing to scan wrapping paper, propane, one drill, one jacket, gloves, two tool sets, soda and diapers. They left the store with the unscanned merchandise, making no attempt to pay for it.

Court documents state the total amount of the merchandise Learned and the unidentified man stole from Walmart was $410.36.
