Two Suffer Minor Injuries In Monday Crash In Warsaw

Two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital after a Monday afternoon accident in which one driver allegedly ran a red light.

Barbara Mendoza Juarez, 30, Wooster Road, Winona Lake, the driver of the first van, complained of head pain. Anna V. Ramirez-Mendoza, 12, same address and a passenger in Mendoza Juarez’s van, complained of neck pain. Both were taken to Parkview Hospital in Warsaw for treatment.

The driver of the second van, Jeremy J. Bever, 41, East Center Street, Warsaw, did not report any injuries.

The Warsaw Police Department received the call of the accident at the intersection of South Scott Street and East Winona Avenue, Warsaw, at 3:38 p.m. Monday.

According to a WPD crash report, Bever said he was driving north in his 2011 Kia Sedona on Scott Street, approaching the traffic light at the intersection with Winona Avenue. As he approached, the traffic light turned green for Scott Street traffic and he proceeded into the intersection. Bever said Mendoza Juarez’s 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan ran the red traffic light while going west on Winona Avenue and hit his van on the passenger side.

Mendoza Juarez said a vehicle had been in front of her van and had stopped at the traffic light, presumably to turn right on red. She said it looked like Bever’s van had gone around the other vehicle just prior to the crash.

Her van sustained significant damage to the passenger side from the initial impact and then sustained more damage to the driver’s side from impact with a city of Warsaw pole.

A WPD officer spoke with Mendoza Juarez at Parkview Hospital regarding the crash with Parkview Hospital officer Lt. David Morales as a translator. Mendoza Juarez said she traveling west on Winona Avenue, approaching the traffic light at Scott Street prior to the crash. She said her traffic light was green and she proceeded into the intersection. She also said that Bever was northbound on Scott Street and he ran the red light, causing her to hit his van in the intersection. She said there were no vehicles traveling in front of her prior to the crash.

Another WPD officer reviewed security footage that caught the intersection. The report states the footage was consistent with Bever’s recollection of the incident and shows a vehicle had been traveling in front of Mendoza Juarez’s van prior to the crash and stopped at the intersection, presumably for the traffic light turning red, according to the report. Bever’s van is then seen entering the intersection from the south as Mendoza Juarez’s van passes the stopped vehicle westbound and hits Bever’s van at a right angle at the intersection.

Damage was estimated at $25,000 to $50,000.
