Hepler Hits Game-Winner For Triton

February 11, 2019 at 6:15 a.m.

BOURBON – Beau Hepler for the win.

Hepler hit a game-winning three-pointer to lead the Triton boys basketball team to a 43-42 home win Saturday over Clinton Christian.

“I said (to our players), I’m proud because you guys found a way to win,” said Triton coach Jason Groves.

The game was close throughout, featuring four lead changes and three ties.

The Couriers (14-7) went ahead 42-40 when CJ Mathis hit the back end of a pair of free throws with 46 seconds left.

Triton (7-9) took 25 seconds off the clock without being able to get a shot off, so Groves called timeout.

“I just looked at Beau and said, ‘You gonna knock it down?’” Groves said. “And he said, ‘Yup.’”

After a number of passes, Hepler took aim from behind the three-point arc, and made the shot with around seven seconds to play.

“He’s been struggling finding his own (rhythm) behind the three-point line, and it was nice to see a senior step up and say, ‘I’ll hit it, coach,’” Groves said.

With Clinton Christian primed to go end to end, Groves called timeout with six seconds left.

“Our guys were probably frantic right there,” he said. “I just wanted to make sure we were matched up.”

Triton’s defense suppressed the Couriers, who did not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.

Clinton Christian coach Chad Schrock said the difference was Triton’s shooting.

“We couldn’t get out on some of their shooters, and they knocked down a few more shots,” Schrock said.

The Trojans shot 44 percent from the floor to the Couriers’ 31 percent from the field.

Triton started the game sloppily, turning over the ball on seven of its first eight possessions.

“I said, ‘Just relax, move the ball, things will open up,’ and when we got through that I thought we did a nice job,” Groves said.

Hepler’s game-winner was the payoff of getting back into a groove since he missed four games following an early-season shoulder injury.

“It’s been tough, but the support’s been great,” Hepler said.

Ashton Oviedo led the Trojans with 11 points, while Keegan Westafer scored 10 points and Hepler added eight points.

Herschel Miller had a team-high 10 points for Clinton Christian, while Mathis and Seth Shetler scored nine points each.

Triton will play Tuesday at Rochester.
