County Highway Getting New Trucks

Kosciusko County Commissioners accepted the recommendations of Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden to purchase trucks and equipment at Tuesday’s commission meeting in Warsaw.

Tilden said a bid for a 3/4-ton, four-wheel drive pickup truck from Rice Ford was the lowest bid that met all the specifications. That truck will be purchased for $33,654.

Commissioners also approved the purchase of a single-axle and a double-axle truck, and equipment to put a dump bed on each of the trucks.

Tilden also said another county tandem-axle truck was involved in a rollover accident on Jan. 22. The county’s insurance company declared the truck a total loss, and Tilden said his department has agreed to keep the vehicle to use for parts. The department has several Sterling trucks built in the 1980s, and parts are becoming hard to get.

The insurance settlement, for about $14,000, won’t cover the price of replacing the vehicle, and the timeframe between ordering a truck and taking delivery can take a year or more, he said.

To insure the county won’t be short a snow-plowing vehicle in the 2019-20 winter season, the commissioners agreed to work with Tilden to find a delivery-ready vehicle, likely to be a dealer demonstrator truck, and look for places within the department’s budget to find the money necessary to get a truck in place.

Gale Danner of Warsaw was honored at the county’s Veteran of the Month. He served in the Air Force from 1967 to 1971, earning the rank of staff sergeant and serving a one-year tour in Vietnam.

County Treasurer Rhonda Hesler presented the Board of Finances’ organization and investment policy for commission approval. She also received permission to void checks the county wrote that haven’t been cashed or deposited in more than two years.

Chad Miner, county attorney, recommended the renewal of a lease with Cardinal Services for a county-owned building. The current two-year lease, with payments of $1,000 a month, expires this month, and the new lease replicates the terms of the old one. The board approved the new lease.

In other business the board,  the board entered into an agreement that permits all who work security at the courthouse and in the justice building to make arrests when necessary.

The next county commission meeting will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 19.
