SYRACUSE — Wrestling fans were treated to more than just a Wawasee victory Thursday.

The Warriors (11-1, 2-1) brought excitement while also besting visiting Goshen 49-27 in a Northern Lakes Conference dual meet.

It was “Whiteout” night at Wawasee. The Warriors stepped under the ring light and earned seven match victories plus a forfeit.

The victors were senior Logan Stuckman (pin at 106), sophomore Dylan Tom (pin at 1:20), sophomore Elliot Tinsley (major decision at 138), freshman Cameron Zimmerman (pin at 152), senior Isiah Faurote (10-5 decision at 160), senior Logan Baugh (pin at 170) and senior Fernando Hernandez (pin at 182). Junior Jace Alexander (126) won by forfeit.

“We feed off the team environment very well,” said Wawasee head coach Frank Bumgardner. “We start getting on a roll and everyone just feeds off the energy.

“We want to be sure not to fall in the trap where everybody gets a first-period pin. That’s not what’s expected. What’s expected is that we wrestle for six minutes. If you get a first-period pin, great!” Bumgardner was pleased to see his grapplers make a jump in improvement in the past week.

“Our movement, our head position, our positioning on the hips, our attacks are much, much better,” said Bumgardner. “We’re trying to score points and have fun.

“It’s a lot of fun when you’re able to wrestle and not worry about where this one position is going to determine the match or not. Let’s create a bunch of wrestling. Let’s create a bunch of action and see what happens.” Bumgardner said he is looking for coachable wrestlers and that’s what he’s getting so far in 2019-20.

“We’ve got high expectations,” said Bumgardner. “About a week ago, we kind of changed gears on where we’re at and where we’re going just to fit the team we currently have.

“We made a fundamental switch in what we were doing. The amount of growth we’ve shown in a week is huge. It’s very, very encouraging.” Bumgardner said Wawasee is planning three different theme nights for its stand-alone home dual meets. Besides “Whiteout Night” with its white T-shirts and white singlets, “Senior Night” is Jan. 9 against NorthWood and “Throwback Night” Jan. 16 against South Bend St. Joseph.

The spot light became a part of duals during “Senior Night” a few seasons ago.

“It just creates a very intense kind of environment,” said Bumgardner.

“It’s good for the fans. It’s entertaining. That’s why we have theme nights. We want it to be something fun for the community.” Goshen (8-7, 2-1) earned match wins at five weights — sophomore Nick Olson (pin at 113), senior Rasheed Bonds (pin at 132), senior Kaleb Kilmer (pin at 195), sophomore Alberto Sanchez (2-1 decision at 220) and senior Jose Rosales (pin at 285).

“We’ve got to get physically tougher,” said RedHawks head coach Jim Pickard. “We’re very timid. No excuses. We’re enough matches in that we can’t keep doing that.” NLC foe NorthWood visits Goshen Tuesday, Dec. 17. Next up for Wawasee is a conference road meet at Concord Thursday, Dec. 19.
