Lancer Men’s Basketball Prevails In Crossroads Thriller
By Grant Cool-
Sons finished the day with eight points and six rebounds, and Haden Deaton once again led the Lancers (7-3, 3-0 Crossroads League) with 18 points.
Grace got off to a slow start, allowing Huntington to score on its first six possessions. The Lancers quickly found themselves down 15-2.
Grace eventually settled down, and a 3-pointer from Charlie Warner shifted some momentum back to the home team.
The teams traded baskets during the middle of the period, and Cody Holmes made two field goals to close the gap at 25-21.
The Foresters (5-5, 1-2 CL) led by as many as 12 in the first half and held a 40-31 advantage as the teams entered halftime.
Holmes led the Lancers with seven points in the opening half. Freshman Myles Johnson brought defensive intensity off the bench with two blocks.
Grace shot 42 percent from the field, including a 2-of-14 performance (14 percent) from beyond the arc. Huntington, comparatively, made seven triples before halftime.
The Lancers had a much better start to the second half, holding the Foresters to just two made baskets in the opening five minutes. Following nine straight points from Deaton, the Lancers had their first lead of the game at 48-47.
Huntington regained the lead, but Grace quickly answered. A pair of corner 3-pointers from freshman Hank Smith sent the crowd into a frenzy.
The teams battled back and forth over the final minutes with neither side able to pull away. With less than 30 seconds left, Huntington held a 71-69 advantage.
Smith was sent to the free throw line with 17 seconds left and hit both free throws to bring the game back even. With time winding down it looked as if the Lancers would have to rely on their defense to play for overtime.
Huntington drove the lane in an attempt to win the game, but the last-second shot was off the mark. Sons snared the rebound and was promptly fouled with four-tenths of a second remaining in regulation.
With 0.4 seconds showing on the clock, Sons calmly sank both free throws to give Grace a 73-71 win.
Matt Jennings finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Charlie Warner had five rebounds to go along with 10 points.
The Lancers finish their homestand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they host Holy Cross.
