2 from Fort Wayne face theft counts

A Fort Wayne duo wound up in handcuffs at a bar after police tracked them down for allegedly stealing from Lowe’s.

Renee Marie Rogers, 42, and Stephen Alphonso Gamez Jr., 46, both of Fort Wayne, were booked in the Kosciusko County Jail around 2 p.m. Nov. 22 and face a Class A misdemeanor charge of theft.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Tuesday in Kosciusko Superior Court II for charges against Rogers, on Nov. 22 Warsaw police responded to Lowe’s in reference to a theft that had just occurred. While en route to Lowe’s, the officer was informed that the suspect had left in a white Cadillac and had traveled to the Time Out Inn.

An employee of Lowe’s told police Gamez entered the store, placed several items of merchandise into a Lowe’s bucket  then left the store with the bucket and a large box. According to court papers, an employee tried to stop Gamez but he continued into the parking lot and got in the Cadillac, where another employee confronted Gamez. Rogers allegedly was telling Gamez to run the employee over, and Gamez drove the vehicle toward the employee, but the employee was able to get out of the way in time.

Police located the Cadillac at the Time Out Inn, obtained a search warrant for the vehicle and returned the goods to Lowe’s.

According to court records, Rogers was convicted of conversation on April 8, 2014,  in Allen County.

Both of their bonds were set at $600.

Warsaw man held in strangulation

A Warsaw man is facing charges of strangulation and failing to send his child to school.

Bryan Alano Ramsey, 41, of 520 N. Park Ave., Warsaw, and also showing an address of Chicago, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:01 a.m. Wednesday and faces a Level 6 felony strangulation charge and a Class A misdemeanor battery charge.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Dec. 22, 2016, in Kosciusko Superior Court I, on Nov. 18, 2016, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a battery complaint. Upon arrival, a woman told police she was asleep in her bed and when she woke up Ramsey was sitting on her bed. Ramsey then allegedly followed the woman throughout the home, calling her vulgar names and saying “he could end her life.” Court papers also state that Ramsey took the woman’s cellphone and car keys and refused to give them back.

According to court papers, Ramsey began choking the woman to the point she could no longer breathe, pushed her, picked her up by her face/jaw and threw her, causing her to hit her head on the floor. The woman was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for the head injury, court papers state.

Police then learned that Ramsey was wanted for failing to appear at a court hearing in Kosciusko Superior Court II to answer to a failure to ensure school attendance charge, a Class B misdemeanor.

In that case, according to the probable cause affidavit, on Sept. 24, 2015, Warsaw Community Schools contacted Prosecuting Attorney Dan Hampton and reported Ramsey’s child had been absent or tardy from school too many times. Hampton sent Ramsey a letter that read: “I am sure that you are aware of how important a good education is to your child. More to the point, I must advise you that the absences are in violation of the Compulsory School Attendance Law, I.C. 20-33-2-27, and that you, as a parent, MUST take immediate steps to correct this problem. I have instructed the principal to watch school attendance very closely from now on and to let me know immediately if this situation is not corrected. I will take further action if necessary, and am sure neither of us would like that.”

On Nov. 10, 2015, WCS sent Ramsey a letter stating his child had missed 20 total days, and 16 of those days were unexcused.

Hampton filed charges against Ramsey on Dec. 4, 2015.

Ramsey’s bond is set at $6,000.
