Coon, Marsh Lead Tigers To Win In Last Visit To Weeks Gymnasium

Seniors Jaylen Coon and Blake Marsh made sure of it, combining for 35 points in the Tigers’ 55-48 win over the Eagles.
The next time the Eagles host Warsaw in 2021, the game will be played in Columbia City’s new high school, which is nearing the end of construction.
“I love this old gym,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team extended its overall win streak over Columbia City to seven games, as well as its win streak at Weeks Gymnasium.
“We talked about that before the game, this was the last time we would come here. I have a lot of memories over the years of playing here. I love this old gym, and it’s kind of sad we won’t be playing here anymore, but it was nice to get the last one.”
Playing in a gym that has hosted a number of down-to-the-wire finishes between the U.S. 30 rivals, Coon was 7 of 10 from the field overall and 4 of 6 from three-point range en route to a career-high 19 points, while Marsh chipped in with 16 points, four assists and a pair of steals.
With the Tigers trailing 44-43, Coon converted a four-point play with 2:55 remaining.
The 6-foot-4 senior guard swished his trey attempt, falling down as he was fouled, and then netted the ensuing free throw to give Warsaw a 47-44 advantage.
Coon’s four-point play helped the Tigers outscore the hosts 12-4 over the final three minutes of the game, as Warsaw improved to 2-0 and Columbia City, which opened the season with a 70-65 loss at Whitko, fell to 0-2.
“I’m happy for Jaylen,” said Ogle. “Last year was a monumental struggle for him. He’s capable of playing well, and he sure did tonight. He made a bunch of big shots. He got us off to a really good start, making a couple threes. I’m really happy for Jaylen.”
Prior to Saturday’s 19-point performance, Coon’s career-high scoring effort was nine points against Concord last season.
Junior Bishop Walters scored seven points in the win, while junior Brock Poe and sophomore Jackson Dawson chipped in with six and five points, respectively.
Senior Wyatt Amiss rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with a pair of free throws, as the visitors were 19 of 24 at the charity stripe, including an 11-of-13 effort in the fourth quarter.
“That was the difference in the game, us making 19 out of 24 free throws,” said Ogle. “After 8 for 16 at Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday, we were much better at the free throw line tonight.”
Warsaw led 12-6 after one quarter of play and 19-17 at halftime, while Columbia City held a 35-32 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Eagles, who struggled through a 4-of-16 effort from the arc, got 14 points each from seniors Mitchell Wilson and Max Bedwell, while junior T.J. Bedwell chipped in with nine points.
In the JV game, Warsaw led 17-6 after one quarter of play, but only scored 22 points the rest of the way in a 47-39 loss.
Jaxson Gould led Warsaw’s JV team with 11 points, while Judah Simfukwe tallied eight points, and Jack Yeager and Kyle Dawson scored six points each.
Warsaw will play two home games this weekend, hosting 4A No. 7 Homestead Friday and Huntington North Saturday.
