Warsaw Upends 5A No. 5 Michigan City

By Chip Davenport-

MICHIGAN CITY – The Warsaw Tigers traveled to the Region to face the Michigan City Wolves for the first time since 1922. They entered the game as a two-touchdown underdog, and fans entered with a mindset this game was going to be a program builder win or lose. Well, the Tigers left their blood and sweat on the field in a display of grit and opportunistic play, and a 20-19 comeback win via Harrison Mevis’s 51-yard field goal with 4:20 left in the 4th quarter. The game-winning kick was set up by the small but quick, physical Tiger defense held Michigan City offense on a late-game fourth-down run stop where junior safety Mason Martz sacrificed his body like a warrior to keep QB Michael Bradford from running for a first down. Blake Marsh dealt the death blow with an eleven-yard first down run to allow the Tigers to run out the clock.

“In my mind in those situations, it’s very quiet out there,” Mevis said. “It’s a process I can’t explain, but I know where my head needs to be.”

Tiger head coach Bart Curtis is thankful to have a kicker with the skill level of Mevis.

“I want to thank Harrison Mevis’s parents for giving birth to him,” Curtis said, fresh from his 210th career coaching victory and a huge win for the Warsaw Tiger program.

Mevis, a NCAA Division 1-recruited kicker, started off the Tiger scoring with a 46-yard field goal with 10:10 in the first quarter. Senior defensive end Parker Davenport recovered a Michigan City fumble on the Wolves’ 25-yard line. Mevis stepped in for the kick after the Tigers were pushed back four yards in three plays.

The Wolves seemed like they were heading to pay dirt with a late hit penalty by Warsaw and a mix of rushing and passing to get the ball to the Tiger 16-yard line. However, QB Michael Bradford’s pass to Marquan Hurt was incomplete, ending the drive.

The Tigers went three-and-out on their next series, and a Harrison Mevis punt put the Wolves at their own 46-yard line.  Bradford threw the first of his two first half pics to Blake Marsh and the Tigers took over on their own 27-yard line. The Tigers ran four inside running plays before Wyatt Amiss threw his best pass of the early season, 51 yards to Luke Adameic for a Tiger touchdown and a 10-0 lead following Mevis’s extra point conversion that carried into the stadium parking lot.

Adamiec wasn’t done catching footballs in the first half. His next touch came after a Bradford interception. Adamiec caught a lot of air on the catch, recovered his feet and dashed 51 yards before he was tackled out of bounds at the Wolves 17-yard line. The Tigers needed two plays to score. Larsh helped on the offensive side of the ball with a 17-yard counter untouched from hand-off to the end zone. The Tigers moved to a 17-0 lead.

The Wolves’ punt returning weapon Kaydarious Jones finally popped with a 30-yard punt return to the Tiger 29. They marched to the edge of the goal line before 5’8 205-pound boulder Jonathon Flemings scored the first touchdown against the Tiger defense in 71 minutes.

The Wolves shut down the inside game, flooding the “A” gap and  limiting Juan Jaramillo to 24 first half yards, but the Tigers put points on the board, but Jaramillo knew his body was being punished for a purpose as the Tigers used repeated inside runs to throw off the Wolves’ defense for rare opportunities to advance the ball.

“It’s the team. I do what I do for the team,” Jaramillo said. “Sometimes I’m not going to break loose for a long run, but if it opens something for the rest of the team, and we win, the win is what matters.”

Jaramillo’s longest play form scrimmage was a 41-yard punt return into Michigan City territory early in the fourth quarter.

“(Michigan City) that’s a heck of a defense you saw out there tonight,” Curtis said. “They threw everything at us. They were physical and fast at every position.”

Momentum was on the side of Michigan City in the third quarter. Flemings scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter, to put the Wolves in front 19-17 heading into the fourth quarter. Each of the extra point attempts were no good as senior Nate Stevenson was wide on one and hit the crossbar short on the other. This would prove to make a difference, setting the table for Mevis’s 51-yard game-winner.

Junior defensive tackle Andres Adame recovered two fumbles in the contest. Blake Marsh snagged his ninth career interception.

The Tigers enter their Northern Lakes Conference opener at 2-0 for the second straight season. On Friday Warsaw hosts Plymouth at Fisher Field, perhaps eyeing revenge for a heartbreaking 32-29 overtime loss in 2018.
