Knights Top Tigers in Battle Of Ranked Teams

August 31, 2019 at 8:02 p.m.

Mishawaka Marian High School boys soccer coach Ben Householter admitted he was worried about Warsaw's size.

In a battle of state-ranked teams, though, it was the Class 2A No. 4 Knights who came up big Saturday, posting a 1-0 win over the 3A No. 11 Tigers.

"Defensively I knew we were solid ... what I was worried about was the size of Warsaw, especially giving up those set pieces in the second half. That was gonna be problematic," said Householter, whose team hasn't given up a goal this season.

"We're not the biggest club, so it was definitely a nailbiter toward the end because of their size and being able to get on some balls. I'm very proud that the defense was able to lock it in today."

The game-winner was scored in the 57th minute of the 80-minute match when senior Francisco Tavarez headed in an assist from classmate Jonny Wang.

The Knights, who have outscored their opponents 14-0, improved to 4-0, while the Tigers fell to 5-1.

Warsaw entered Saturday's contest averaging nearly three goals per match, but couldn't put one in the net against a stingy Marian defense that often times played eight men back.

"I told them at halftime, they've been playing eight, nine guys back," said Warsaw coach Frank Courtois. "When they play like that it's hard to score. We were trying to find ways, but we couldn't put it in the back of the net. That's tough.

"(Marian) did a real good job managing the clock. You're down, and then they're managing the clock ... the players get frustrated a little bit. That's part of the game."

The Tigers had six shots on goal, while Marian finished with three. Warsaw had three corner kicks to the Knights' one.

"Marian always has a good team," said Courtois, who said his team was tired after a physical conference-opening win over Plymouth Thursday evening. "They always come to play aggressively. They had a good side."

Warsaw is in action again Wednesday when it travels to conference rival Concord, followed by a spot in the Carroll Tournament.
