NORTH MANCHESTER – Grace’s cross country team began the 2019 season with the unique Manchester Hokum Karem.

The meet featured pairs of runners alternating laps with the women running three 1-mile laps and the men completing four 1-mile laps.

Grace, Huntington, Trine, Indiana Tech, Manchester, St. Francis and St. Mary’s participated in the event.

Isaac Beatty and Carter Meyer were Grace’s fastest duo on the men’s side with a combined time of 40:15. Logan Rufenacht and Bryan Rios-Hernandez were next at 41:06, and Dimitri Margaritidis and John Marhefka were Grace’s third-fastest group at 41:29.

On the women’s side, Jessica Zvers and Heather Plastow led the way in 36:48. Weslea Arthur and Rebekah Rexroth teamed up for a time of 39:05, and Suzanne Sickafoose and Makenzie Adams were next at 39:37.

The Hokum Karem also marked the first competition with Jake Poyner as head coach of the Lancers.

“This was a great start to our campaign. The team really competed well. We saw solid improvement from our returners, and our freshmen stepped up,” Poyner said. “Heather Plastow had an awesome day and saw the results of her hard work and diligence, and Carter Meyer ran very well after some frustrating injuries last year. This was a confidence booster all around for the Lancers moving forward.”

The Lancers’ first traditional race will be Sept. 6 with the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational.
