wawasee Takes Down Lakers
By Alaister McFarren-
The Warriors were spearheaded by junior quarterback Parker Young, who was six of ten passing for 106 yards and added 102 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Originally a defensive back, Young showed exceptional promise during his first game at QB, displaying both a strong arm and great poise.
Senior Ethan Garza added 35 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.
Wawasee jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on Garza’s first touchdown – a 6-yard score – with 7:38 remaining in the first quarter and extended it to 13 on Young’s 1-yard score with 10:59 to go in the second.
Lakeland pushed back and made the score 13-8 on senior Camryn Holbrook’s score with around a minute to go in the first half and having the extra point blocked.
Wawasee struck again midway through the third on Garza’s 22-yard TD run to inflate the lead to 12. Lakeland responded with a touchdown scramble by junior QB Colton Isaacs at the onset of the fourth, but the Warriors gave themselves a two-score lead on Young’s second touchdown run with 5:42 remaining and let the defense finish things up.
Despite the victory, the Wawasee run defense struggled to keep Holbrook in check, allowing him to run for 136 yards and a touchdown on 20 rushing attempts. They also gave up 40 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries to Isaacs and 39 yards on 8 carries to senior Nathan Grossman. However, their pass defense, led by a strong secondary, kept Isaacs in check, letting him complete only one of four passes for 7 yards. Senior Jesse Landeros lead the defense with 10.5 tackles.
Wawasee also struggled with discipline at times, committing nine penalties for 70 yards.
“We’re really going to focus on cleaning things up at practice this week as we prepare for West Noble,” said first-year head coach Jon Reutebuch.
He continued on to say that the “next man up” mantra that the team has adopted played a huge role in the victory, especially in regard to injuries.
“We had a lot of players really step up, especially when they were called on to play unfamiliar positions due to injuries,” said Reutebuch. “There was great leadership and poise from the guys.”
The Warriors will play at West Noble in Ligonier next week.
