Squires Take Tough Loss

DENVER - At the newly christened Tim Dubois Field at North Miami, the host Warriors gave plenty of excitement in just the first few seconds of the new football season.

A three-touchdown performance each from junior Darian Hanley and senior Tristan Working proved to be a little too much as North Miami battled back from an early deficit to win 41-27 over the Squires.

North Miami junior Darian Hanley got the ball rolling, racing past the Squires defense for a 63-yard touchdown run with just 18 seconds taken off the game clock.

The Warriors were there to set the tone early. The Squires had other ideas.

Set up by a 50-yard pass play from senior quarterback Devin Marcum to senior wide receiver Drake Hatfield, senior running back Sam Martindale capped Manchester’s opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie up the game.

On the ensuing drive for North Miami, the Squires recovered a fumble deep in their own territory. A minute into their second possession, Marcum found senior wide receiver Trey Clark for a 60-yard catch-and-run touchdown.

The Squires’ defense would step up again — this time, it would be senior defensive back Tyler Andristch, who recovered the North Miami’s second fumble deep in Manchester territory.

In the second quarter, Martindale would score his second touchdown from seven yards out — giving Manchester their largest lead of the game.

Just before halftime, North Miami senior quarterback Tristan Working would squeak in a 9-yard touchdown run to narrow the deficit to just seven points.

Coming out in the second half, Manchester was firing on all cylinders again as Hatfield scored on a 22-yard touchdown run.

“It’s a setback, absolutely, but the resiliency of our kids is something phenomenal,” said Manchester head football coach Greg Miller. “The look in their eyes…it’s pretty special.”

“That score at the half hurt, but we bounced right back,” said Miller. “That’s something you love to see from a team—come back out of the half and just drive it down and score.”

The Warriors would soon answer, however, as Working worked another 9-yard scoring run on the Squires’ defense.

On Manchester’s next possession, a pass attempt by Marcum was intercepted by the Warriors’ senior linebacker Greg Sonafrank. The turnover would then set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Hanley to tie the game up at 27 in the third quarter.

North Miami’s defense was able to slow Manchester’s offense late in the third, giving the 6-foot-4 Hanley an opportunity to score again. He would score from six yards out in the first play of the final period, to give the host Warriors their first lead since the opening quarter.

Working capped off his own multi-touchdown night with a 1-yard run to cement their Week One victory.

“I just think we made some critical mistakes,” said Miller. “We lost our heads a bit on a couple penalties, and we can’t do that. We have just to stay focused for four quarters.”

Manchester will continue the hunt for their first victory of the 2019 campaign Friday night when they hit the road again, this time to face the Bluffton Tigers.
