Driver Clocked At 110 mph On U.S. 30 Winds Up In Jail

A Lake Station man doing 110 in a 45 mph zone on his way to see his girlfriend wound up in the Kosciusko County Jail.

Brendan D. Black, 21, was arrested at 1:47 a.m. Monday for reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Thursday in Kosciusko Superior Court II, Warsaw Police Department officer Ross Minear was patrolling Lake City Highway near Hacienda when a car going the other direction sped past him at a high rate of speed. Minear reported he clocked the vehicle at 110 mph.

Minear pulled the 2018 Ford Escape over on Orthopedic Drive and told Black the reason for the stop. Black told Minear he was coming from Ohio where he was working and was on his way to Hobart to spend the night with his girlfriend, court papers state. Minear stated he was able to smell alcohol on Black's breath.

"I asked Brendan how much alcohol he had consumed tonight, and he said he had a few beers while still in Ohio. I asked Brendan how many was ‘a few’ beers and Brendan said he had about five beers but that was a couple hours ago before he had left Ohio," the probable cause affidavit states.

Black agreed to field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test. His BAC registered at .079% and he was arrested for reckless driving.

His bond was set at $500.



Syracuse Man Faces Charges After Having Sex With 14-Year-Old

A Syracuse man was released from custody on his own recognizance Aug. 12 after he was arrested for sexual misconduct with a minor.

Austin N. Spurling, 25, of 514 Prairie Drive, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:58 a.m. Aug. 7 on one count of sexual misconduct with a minor, a Level 4 felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Tuesday in Kosciusko Superior Court I, Syracuse Police Department officer Jason Longmire located a vehicle that had been reported stolen by a juvenile.

"Officer Longmire approached the vehicle and observed a male subject asleep in the backseat of the vehicle with his pants on the floor board and his underwear pulled down exposing his buttocks. A female was asleep on the driver's side rear seat … and observed stains on the seat," court papers state.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Spurling told police he met the 14-year-old girl on Facebook and "knew that she was 14. He advised the girl took her grandparents' vehicle, drove to Syracuse and picked him up at the Pizza King, and they drove around for a little bit, parked in parking lot and he had sexual intercourse with her and was not wearing a condom."

Spurling's bond was set at $10,250. He's expected in court at 1 p.m. Aug. 30.



$20 Theft From Convenience Store Brings Class A Misdemeanor Charge

A Warsaw woman was taken to jail after allegedly stealing $20 worth of laffy taffy, beef jerky and lunchables from an area gas station.

Kassandra D. Roberts, 26, of 2301 E. Fort Wayne St., was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 2:34 p.m. Aug. 14 on one count of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Aug. 8 in Kosciusko Superior Court II, an employee of Pak-A-Sak, 330 E. Center St., told police a woman entered the store around 4:30 p.m. July 15 and put four Laffy Taffy ropes, a pepperoni Lunchable, lemon lime Gatorade, two cans of ravioli, a beef jerky and a couple Airheads into her purse then left the store. The total came to $20.51, according to court papers.

She was being held on a $5,850 bond.
