Theft Of Keys, Gun, Cash Brings Charges Against South Bend Man

A South Bend man was arrested for allegedly stealing car keys and then stealing $7 and a 9 mm handgun from the vehicle.

Jacob R. Shreve, 20, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 3:42 p.m. Tuesday on one count of theft, a Level 6 felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed July 26 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, Syracuse police were dispatched to Ace Hardware in reference to a theft that occurred on June 30. An employee told police he parked his vehicle in the parking lot and left his keys on the employee desk in the center of the store, but when he went to leave he noticed his keys were missing. Upon checking his vehicle, he realized $7 in cash and a black Smith & Wesson 9 mm handgun had been stolen from his truck, according to court papers.

Surveillance video shows Shreve and another man taking the keys, leaving the store, entering their own vehicle, driving next to the employee's truck, then "movement can be seen."

According to police, they had previously received information from CrimeNet about two subjects, identified as the two men, who shoplift using a scheme that matched this incident's behavior.

Shreve's bond was set at $6,200, and he bonded out Wednesday afternoon.

Woman Faces Forgery Charge After Trying To Pass Phony Bill

A Fort Wayne woman who allegedly tried to use a fake $20 bill and sign up for a grocery store credit card with someone else's name was taken to jail Tuesday for forgery.

Heather R. Stanley, 40, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 1:27 p.m. Tuesday for identity deception, forgery and counterfeiting, all Level 6 felonies.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Aug. 9 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, Warsaw police were called to Martin's Supermarket in reference to a man and woman using a counterfeit $20 bill on July 15. Police were also told the woman had filled out a Martin's credit card application and her name was Amanda Tarvin out of Fort Wayne.

Police contacted Tarvin who said she has not been to Warsaw recently and she provided police with a picture of herself. Police determined the woman in the surveillance footage from the store was not Tarvin. Tarvin also told police she believes the suspect could be Stanley, who used to be her roommate. Court papers state Tarvin said she had an identification card sent to the address where Stanley lives, but had never received it from Stanley.

Police were able to find a picture of Stanley and determined she was the woman in the video. Police discovered Stanley was currently incarcerated in the Allen County Jail and spoke with her there, where, according to court papers, she said she remembered applying for the credit card.

Stanley is being held on a $5,750 bond.

Felon Tries To Buy Gun, Winds Up Back In Jail

An Etna Green convicted felon is in jail after allegedly lying on an application when trying to purchase a gun.

Davis F. Jones III, 39, of 210 W. Railroad St., was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday on one count of providing a false statement on a consent form, a Level 6 felony.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Aug. 7 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, the FBI contacted Indiana State Police and said Jones had tried to purchase a firearm at John's Bargain Barn in Kosciusko County, although he was a felon.

ISP spoke with the owner of John's Bargain Barn on July 19 and was informed that Jones attempted to purchase a firearm on July 3 but was denied due to a prior felony conviction. The owner provided police with the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms form 4473 that Jones filled out and showed he had stated he did not have a prior felony conviction, according to court papers.

Police found Jones was convicted for felony driving under the influence in Marshall County in May 1986. When police interviewed Jones, he admitted he attempted to purchase the firearm and that he knew he was denied due to his criminal history, court papers state.

Jones was held on a $10,250 bond and was released on his own recognizance Wednesday morning.
