WINONA LAKE - Grace’s baseball team secured a spot in the Crossroads League Tournament thanks to a split of Goshen on Friday.

Houston Haney was dominant from the mound in the opening game, leading Grace to a 5-1 win. The Maple Leafs (17-27, 11-15 CL) found revenge with a 12-2 victory in the nightcap.

The series will be decided on Saturday with a nine-inning game starting at 10 a.m. at Miller Athletic Complex. The winner of that game also decides the No. 7 or No. 8 seed in the upcoming CL Tournament.

Grace’s appearance in the CL Tournament will be the first since 2014. The Lancers (14-24, 10-16 CL) also reached double-digit league wins for the third time in program history.

In the opening game, Grace scored in the first inning; that was nearly all the support that Haney needed.

Chris Griffin walked and moved to third with a pair of singles. He then raced home after a ground ball from Mitchell Enyart for a 1-0 lead.

The game saw zero runs from the second to fourth innings, allowing the Lancers to build on their lead.

In the fourth, Sam Newkirk walked and eventually scored on a RBI single from RJ Snyder.

Grace’s cushion blossomed to 4-0 in the fifth. Jacob Sapp doubled with two outs, and David Anderson and Ethan Brooks both scored on the play.

The Maple Leafs were kept off the scoreboard by Haney for the first five innings. Goshen finally plated in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly, but that proved to be the only run for the visitors.

Haney took care of the rest from the mound. He went the distance, allowing eight hits and one run over seven innings. He walked two and struck out five to get the victory.

Anderson batted 3 for 3 with a run, and Xavier Harris hit 2 for 4 with a stolen base. Enyart had a pair of RBIs, and Griffin was 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Goshen’s bats were much hotter in the second game. The Maple Leafs pounded out 16 hits en route to a 10-run win.

Grace’s only runs came in the third when Enyart and Sid Elford hit back-to-back RBI doubles.

Elford was 2 for 4, Anderson had 1 hit, 1 run and 1 steal, and Enyart was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Friday was also Senior Day. Grace’s nine seniors were honored after the doubleheader, including Josh Tew, Branden Scott, Aaron Voirol, Enyart, Beach Harmon, Jacob Hammel, Hunter Ackerman, Scottie Clark and Logan Swartzentruber.
