WATERFORD MILLS — Triton took a lead in the top of the seventh inning before losing in high school baseball Monday at Bethany Christian’s Bodiker Field.

The Trojans (1-7) went up 6-5 in the seventh before the Bruins (3-3) won in walk-off fashion 8-6 on Tony Moser’s three-run home run.

With two outs in top of the seventh, Kobe Mast walked and scored on a double to left by No. 9 hitter Nate Stinson.

“We competed,” said Triton coach Tyler Hensley. “That’s the toughest thing to teach any kid, especially at the high school level. We’ve got (several) kids who haven’t played high school baseball.

“To stay in the game and not quit, that’s pretty much what we’re trying to bring back to Triton.”

On the day, Stinson accounted for two of his team’s seven hits and tied Ryan Kaufman for the squad lead in runs batted in with two.

Bethany scored the game’s first run in the first. Lead-off man Jacob Plank reached on a missed third strike and later scored on Moser’s sacrifice fly to center.

Triton went up 5-1 with a five-run third. The Trojans sent 11 batters to the plate.

With one out, Ty Ferry, Nate Riggins and Delano Shumpert all walked, A two-run double to center plated Ferry and Riggins. Shumpert scored on a single to right by Dominic Smith.

Jeramiah Farrell’s single to plate drove in Smith.

Bethany scored one run in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2.

Plank singled to left and scored on Beck Willems’ single to center.

The inning ended on a double play as pitcher Ferry caught a pop-up and fired to third base to double off the runner.

The Bruins tallied three two-out runs in the fifth to forge a 5-5 tie.

Triton committed three errors during the frame, including two on the play as Moser (double to left) and Willems (infield single) made the last two tallies in the inning.

On a day when he drove in five runs, Moser’s game-winner in the seventh came on the first pitch he saw from right-hander Ferry following singles to Jacob Plank and Tyson Miller.

Stinson (2) and Kaufman (2) led the team in runs batted in. Stinson produced two of his team’s seven hits.

The Trojans swiped four bases — two for Ferry and one each for Riggins and Shumpert.

Ferry struck out five and walked two. He enjoyed 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and sixth. Of the 18 outs, seven came on pop-ups or fly-balls.

Bethany used two pitchers — Plank for the first 2 2/3 innings and Miller the rest of the way. They combined for 12 strikeouts and eight walks.

Next up for Triton is a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game at LaVille Thursday.
