Wawasee Baseball Routs Whitko At Parkview Field Showcase

Wawasee took immediate control of the game in their first turn at the plate. The inning featured back to back triples from Ethan Garza and Grant Brooks, both driving in runs. Kameron Salazar, Tony Garcia, Gabe Moore, Austin Baker, and Levi Brown also recorded hits in the inning. After taking a commanding 8-1 lead, the Warriors put the game in cruise control and allowed their defense to do the rest.
Salazar, a sophomore pitcher, earned the win for the Warriors. He allowed only one run on five hits and struck out six Wildcat batters in the first three innings. He also earned a run on the offensive end. When asked about his preparation, Salazar cited the team’s comeback against Warsaw. “[We had] a great team win versus Warsaw. We kept battling back, the pitchers did a good job mentally staying in the game, and we had great at bats.” Salazar also expressed excitement about playing at Parkview, saying “the lights are pretty cool. We don’t have lights at our stadium so it’s a cool experience.”
The bright lights certainly didn’t dim Wawasee’s offense. Baker and Brown both recorded 2 RBIs, a game high. The Warriors finished with ten runs on thirteen hits. They also drew five walks, showcasing their aptitude for plate vision.
Whitko struggled to contain Wawasee in the first inning, but their defense held strong the rest of the game. Aiden Hoffman took the loss, allowing eight runs in his only inning at the mound. Fortunately for the Wildcats, their deep pitching rotation soon revealed itself. Evan Wilson, Colton King, and Zackkery Neer allowed only five hits and two runs the rest of the way. King also threw a team-high two strikeouts on the game.
Offensively, Whitko was passive for much of the game. Neer and sophomore Evan Wilson were the team’s offensive leaders, accounting for all three of the Wildcats’ runs. Bryce Rhodes also provided an RBI for his team.
Whitko (1-5) will look to rebound at home against Southwood today at 5 p.m. Wawasee (5-1) will seek their sixth straight win at home against Elkhart Memorial today at 5:30. p.m.
