In their first home game of the season, the Warsaw Tigers suffered a 12-2 loss to the East Noble Knights in a non-conference softball game, dropping their record to 0-2.

A stout defense and several Warsaw errors allowed the Knights to cruise to a win.

Warsaw showed signs of life, but never fully appeared comfortable. After quickly falling behind 4-0, the Tigers scored two runs in the 3rd inning to cut the deficit in half. However, East Noble responded with eight unanswered runs, ending the game in the fifth inning.

Junior Pitcher Dani Jaquay got the win for the Knights, who improved to 2-1. Jaquay’s 2-RBI Home Run in the first inning gave her team a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish. She also pitched for nine strikeouts and allowed only two Tiger hits before being relieved by Junior Rylee Cripe in the 5th.

Warsaw Senior Pitcher Courtney Chookie faced a heavy workload all night, which she parlayed into five strikeouts. Chookie finished with a pitch count of 107 in just four innings, more than both East Noble pitchers combined. A troublesome 4th inning, which included three Warsaw errors and six East Noble runs, would be Chookie’s last on the mound. Relief Pitcher Hudson Bolinger recorded another strikeout in the game’s final inning.

East Noble turned in a very strong offensive performance on the road. Jaquay led the way, going 3 for 4 with five RBIs. Senior Shortstop Grace Erwin also played well, going 3 for 4 with four more RBIs. RF Sidney Willey, C Lauren Lash, 1B Rylee Cripe, and 3B Carly Turner also scored for the Knights.

Warsaw’s hitting was stunted the entire game by Jaquay’s pitching, as most innings saw four or less Tigers even take the plate. The first and second innings both ended on three consecutive strikeouts. The third inning also ended in back-to-back Tiger strikeouts.

While Warsaw struggled at the plate all night, several players flashed their abilities. Carmen Albertson scored the first run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third. Avery Sleeth scored later the same play on a Lindsey Bradley line drive. Senior Katie Anderson also recorded a hit for the Tigers on an early double.

Warsaw was able to draw some bright spots on defense. Senior First Baseman Hailey Locke brought a six-run inning to a close with an impressive catch along the first base line in the fourth inning. Avery Sleeth was also able to track down a fly ball to deep left field to retire the fifth inning, leaving a runner stranded on third base.

The Tigers are right back at it tonight, hosting Carroll in a non-conference game with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
