An Atwood man is facing a number of charges after leading police on a high-speed chase Friday and allegedly throwing a stolen gun out the window during the pursuit.

Anthony Wayne Miller, 37, of 111 E. High St., Atwood, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 4:19 p.m. Friday on preliminary charges of reckless driving, driving while suspended with a prior suspension within the last five years and resisting law enforcement.

Court documents filed Monday list the charges against him as resisting law enforcement, a level 6 felony; obstruction of justice, a level 6 felony; theft, a level 6 felony; driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor; carrying a handgun without a license, a Class A misdemeanor; and carrying a handgun without a license, a level 5 felony.

His bond was set at $10,000 surety and $250 cash.

On Friday, Claypool Police Officer Ben Sanders saw a silver-colored passenger vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed limit on Ind. 15 in the area of Union Street. He conducted a traffic stop and the vehicle turned onto CR 550S, court documents state.

Sanders exited his vehicle and approached the car containing two men. The vehicle accelerated west on CR 550S, fleeing from Sanders. He pursued the vehicle, reaching speeds of 116 mph.

The vehicle turned north on CR 400W and eventually stopped at CR 525S.

Sanders identified the driver as Miller and the passenger as Derek Gasaway. Officers arrested Miller for resisting law enforcement and searched him, finding numerous small, clear, empty plastic bags and $442. The vehicle was secured and officers saw an empty gun holster and a black magazine in plain view on the passenger-side floorboard.

Sanders reviewed his dash camera’s footage of the pursuit and saw a black object being tossed from the vehicle in the area of 2844 W. CR 550S. Sanders drove to that area and found a black Taurus handgun with a loaded 9 mm magazine in the field. The handgun was thrown from the driver’s side of the vehicle, court documents state.

Officers learned the handgun was reported stolen on March 15 by a man who said it was stolen from his vehicle.

Gasaway admitted to an officer that Miller threw the handgun out the window during the pursuit.

Sanders also learned Miller’s Indiana driver’s license was suspended.

Miller was convicted of domestic battery, a level 6 felony, on April 10, 2017, in Kosciusko County Superior Court. He also was convicted of strangulation and battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, both level 6 felonies, on Sept. 1, 2016, in Kosciusko County Superior Court III. He also was convicted of domestic battery, a level 6 felony, on Sept. 1, 2016, in Superior III.

Miller has two active, pending criminal cases of dealing in methamphetamine, level 2 felonies, in Kosciusko County Circuit Court.
