BENTON — Wawasee and Fairfield got back to the business of playing high school softball.

Coming off spring break, the Falcons defeated the Warriors 5-2 Monday in a non-conference game at sunny and windy Falcon Field.

Wawasee and Fairfield last played on March 28.

Senior Faith Swihart doubled and scored both runs and sophomore Kiaundra Olson also cracked a double and executed a sacrifice bunt for Wawasee (2-3).

“We were off for a whole week,” said Warriors coach Chloe McRobbie. “We had one practice that some of the players could make it to on Saturday.

“Even with these rough games, I still believe in them. They work hard. They set goals for themselves. They’re dedicated. They’ve just got to bring it when we show up to play.”

Freshman No. 9 hitter Abigayle Smith doubled off the fence in center to start the top of the seventh inning for Wawasee.

The sophomore right-hander retired the next three batters to earn the pitching win for Fairfield (3-1).

The Falcons left the bases loaded in a scoreless sixth against senior left-hander Marissa Hunziker. A strikeout ended the threat.

The Warriors left a runner at third base in a scoreless sixth. Olson rapped a two-out double, but Miller induced a groundout to squelch the rally.

Swihart doubled to right, moved to third base on Olson’s groundout and scored on an error.

Fairfield left runners at first and second in a score-free third. Sophomore Laney Faldoe socked a lead-off single to left and Shank was hit by a pitch.

The Warriors left runners at the corners but did not score in the third. With two outs, sophomore Olivia Stuck was struck by a pitch and Flannery followed with a single that pushed junior courtesy runner Grace Allen to third base before Miller retired the side.

Fairfield went down in order against Flannery in the second.

Wawasee tallied one run without getting a hit in the second to cut the gap to 2-1. Swihart drew a lead-off walk, moved to second base on Olson’s sacrifice bunt, advanced to third base on sophomore Ava Rush’s groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

“We were patient and took some walks,” said Fairfield coach John Skibbe. “Those were key. We hadn’t seen live pitching for a week.

“When Kayla’s pitching we know we have to play solid defense. She usually plays shortstop. (Freshman) Brooke (Sanchez) stepped in a did a really nice job at short for us tonight.”

The Warriors stranded runners at first and second in a scoreless first. Hunziker rapped a one-out single to center. With two outs, Flannery was hit by a pitch.
