A second inmate has died within a month at the Kosciusko County Jail and the Indiana State Police is investigating.

According to a news release from the ISP, at the request of Kosciusko County Sheriff Kyle Dukes the ISP is investigating the death of a male inmate Monday at the jail.

“It’s too bad it happened. It’s two different incidents that were out of our control,” Dukes said in a telephone interview Monday afternoon.

The state police were contacted Monday after an inmate was discovered unresponsive in his jail cell around 1 p.m. Once the inmate was discovered, CPR was attempted but was unsuccessful. The inmate was taken to the Kosciusko Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

This is an ongoing investigation and no other details will be released at this time, the release states. An autopsy is scheduled.

The identity of the inmate will be released once family is notified. Dukes said the deceased inmate’s family resides in Georgia.

“As soon as he was incarcerated, the mom never answered the phone,” Dukes said. The KCSO had to contact a police department there to notify the family, and Dukes said they had not heard back as of 5 p.m. Monday.

Drugs were not involved in Monday’s death, he said.

On March 9, jail staff found an unresponsive man – Dennis Edward McCrory, 39. Staff performed CPR on him and 911 was called. Lutheran EMS continued with CPR. During this time, six doses of Narcan were administered to McCrory. He was taken to KCH for medical treatment and then to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he was pronounced dead.

In that case, Dukes said his office turned in information to the county prosecutor’s office on a “suspect” and had to wait on toxicology results.

“We’re waiting for a decision this week” from the prosecutor’s office on whether there will be charges, he said.

The Indiana State Police were assisted by the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office and KCSO on Monday.
