Behind Kiser, Panthers Roll Over Triton

September 22, 2018 at 6:57 a.m.

BOURBON – The Triton Trojans faced a Kiser on a roll Friday night.

The host Trojans stayed close early, but lost 56-6 to Class 1A No. 1 Pioneer in Hoosier North Athletic Conference football action.

That was in large part because of Jack Kiser, the quarterback and safety for Pioneer who is committed to play linebacker at Notre Dame next fall.

Kiser ran for four scores and threw for one more, and racked up 184 yards of total offense.

“As far as I’m concerned, Jack Kiser is the No. 1 football player in the state,” said Triton coach Ron Brown. “He should be (Mr. Football).”

Even with Kiser on the field, the Trojans hung tough early against the defending state champion Panthers, who are now on a 21-game win streak.

Pioneer held a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter when Triton quarterback James Snyder connected with Tye Orsund down the right sideline for a 41-yard bomb.

Orsund made it to the Pioneer 1, and on the next play Snyder ran it in to make the score 14-6.

It was the first time a team had scored on Pioneer since LaVille did so in Week 3.

“We knew (the Trojans) were gonna come out and give it their all,” said Pioneer coach Adam Berry.

“That’s what they did, and really they took it to us. Even though we scored on the first drive, they took it to us and our ball-carriers just happened to make plays.”

Triton had a chance to even the score. After stopping the Panthers in their own territory, the Trojans set up shop at the Pioneer 30-yard line.

However, the Trojans were stalled after failing to convert on 4th and 2 at the 22.

Pioneer turned around to go 78 yards on five plays, capping the drive with Kiser’s 11-yard touchdown run.

From there, it was all Pioneer. Kiser scored two more times to lead the Panthers into the locker room up 34-6.

Pioneer piled on the points in the second half while allowing Triton just one first down.

Despite the lopsided score, Brown was happy with some of the things the Trojans did, including their touchdown.

“(The touchdown) lets the kids know that they’re able to play with a high-caliber team, and they’re able to move the ball and do some good things. I feel like we’re gonna take some steps forward next week.”

Triton running back Delano Shumpert agreed.

“We want to focus on winning out, achieving our goals we have set, so we can go forward into the tournament and hopefully be successful,” he said. “(We want to) finish business that we have unfinished from last year.”
