Bremen Lions Roar Past Triton Trojans

September 8, 2018 at 6:59 a.m.

BREMEN – “It is what it is.”

Triton football coach Ron Brown said those words multiple times after the Trojans’ 49-7 loss in a non-conference game at Bremen.

“Bump in the road,” said Brown. “They’re a good team. We knew they were a good team. It is what it is.”

Bremen (4-0) wasted no time finding the end zone. Running back Nathan Mullen capped off a 6-play, 69-yard drive with a 1-yard run to put the Lions up 8-0 less than three minutes into the game.

Mullen finished with 22 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns, and hauled in a pass for another score.

“He’s a load when he runs the football,” said Bremen coach Jordan Leeper. “When we’re hitting our assignments and he’s getting in the open field, he’s tough to bring down.”

Just more than two minutes later, Bremen quarterback Ryan Caldwell found a streaking Justin Zumbrun down the middle for the 57-yard strike and 15-0 lead.

The Trojans (2-2) answered with a 57-yard touchdown pass of their own a few minutes later.

James Snyder found Tye Orsund wide open down the left sideline to make the score 15-7.

The Trojans looked as if they could score a few times after that.

Orsund picked off a Bremen pass around midfield to spawn momentum for Triton, but the Lions returned the favor with an interception of their own a few plays later.

The Trojans benefitted from a short Bremen punt to set up shop in Lions territory on their next drive.

However, a 4th-and-1 try for the first down fell short, and that’s as close as the Trojans got to the Bremen end zone for the rest of the game.

Snyder ultimately didn’t factor in the momentum swings too much.

“(It’s a) different game by a few points here or there,” he said. “Momentum always plays a big part of what happens. We’re dealing with teenage kids and teenage emotions, and sometimes things go awry and they have a hard time keeping it in check.”

Meanwhile, Bremen piled on the points. The Lions led 29-7 at halftime and tacked on another score before the end of the third.

By then, the game was safely out of reach of Triton.

The Trojans committed four turnovers and gained just 47 yards on the ground.

“We need to do a better job taking care of blocking, and do a better job of scheming during the game,” Brown said.

Still, the coach was not overly concerned with the loss.

“Like I told the guys, it’s a non-conference game,” Brown said. “I’m not worried about what a 2A team just did to us. We play 1A schools, we’re getting ready for our 1A season.

“All the goals that I set for the team are still attainable. Every single one of them. And if we attain the goals that I set, we’ll go down as the best team in Triton history.”
