The Tigers’ boys soccer team rebounded from losses last week and a tie Tuesday for a 2-1 win over Penn in a non-conference match at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
“This win just boosted up their spirit a little bit,” said Warsaw coach Frank Courtois. “We definitely needed this win to get us going again and get ready for the postseason.”
The Tigers (5-2-3) started the match hot.
After a Kingsmen grabbed Warsaw’s Garrett Reinholt in the box, Blake Burns netted a penalty kick in the eighth minute for the Tigers’ 1-0 lead.
Jorge Rico scored on Ethan Grill’s assist in the 25th minute to give Warsaw a 2-0 advantage.
“After we tied (Elkhart Memorial), I asked them to come out and play aggressive and be the aggressor,” Courtois said. “That shows that, when we are the aggressor, we make things happen.”
Penn (1-6-1) answered in the 29th minute on Dorian Clayton’s well-placed ball in the corner of Warsaw’s net.
The second half featured intensity on both sides, but fewer shots on goal than in the first.
Penn had a chance to tie the score late in the match when a corner kick put the ball right in front of Warsaw’s goal.
The Tigers’ defense was able to clear the ball, though, and the Kingsmen never threatened after that.
“One thing, no fault to our players, but we’re not (six-foot-tall),” said Penn coach Kyle Zaber. “Warsaw had some big boys in the back so any ball in the air, they beat us.”
Warsaw had nine shots on goal, while Harrison Mevis was in the net with two saves for the Tigers.
The JV match ended in a 0-0 tie, while Penn defeated Warsaw’s “C” Team 1-0.
The Tigers will be back in action Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in a home non-conference match against Fort Wayne Concordia.
