Call it a learning experience.

The Warsaw boys tennis team faced Homestead, ranked third in the state by the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association, and lost 5-0 Wednesday in a home match.

“You learn more from playing players like this,” said Warsaw coach Stacy Lind.

The closest match of the day came at No. 1 doubles, with Warsaw’s Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight staying close midway through the first set.

“I was really impressed with how they move,” Homestead coach Kerry Mumma said of Britton and Knight. “Very active, and that kind of gave our kids trouble for a while.”

The score was 3-2 when Homestead’s Bryant Zitlaw and Tim Steiner started hitting their spots and won a few long volleys to pull away for the 6-2 set victory.

“(Britton and Knight were) just playing against a really tough team, and the opponents just stepped up and brought their full game on,” Lind said.

Homestead (9-0) breezed through the singles matches amidst hot temperatures. The Spartans won each match in a sweep.

“Those are our strong points, and those guys usually get off the court the quickest,” Mumma said.

Homestead also won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

Despite the loss, Lind and her team are taking positives into the next match, which is today at 5 p.m at Fort Wayne Canterbury.

“The boys said themselves that they learned things that they need to work on,” Lind said. “They got to experience that at doubles, getting the ball across the court and keeping the ground shots lower when their opponents are at the net.

“They always walk away with something to look back on and move forward.”

Chip Shots: How Callous IS It?
For every 700 to 1,000 words of mine you read on any given Saturday, I have a list of callous, cynical thoughts and remarks I can make about the topics I discuss… easily five-fold of what I allow past my filter and, in turn, e-mail to my editor.
