Woman Arrested After Allegedly Trading Inmate’s Car For Cash And Guns

Cassandra Joan Szymanski, 23, of 2208 E. Hendricks St., Warsaw, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:52 p.m. Saturday for theft and false informing.
Court documents filed Aug. 27 against Szymanski list the charges against her as theft, a level 6 felony, and false informing, a Class B misdemeanor. Her bond was set at $5,000 surety and $1,000 cash.

On Aug. 19, Warsaw Police Department officer Christopher Brown spoke with an inmate who said he was incarcerated in the Kosciusko County Jail when he had his girlfriend, Szymanski, pick up his maroon 2001 Pontiac from the justice building parking lot. He transferred to work release and could use his vehicle, but Szymanski did not return his calls or his Pontiac so he wanted to report it as stolen.
Over the telephone, Szymanski told Brown that a man and woman stole the inmate’s vehicle from her. She later called Brown back and told him she checked Facebook and found that Christopher Hodges had the vehicle.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department received information that Hodges had the inmate’s vehicle and was painting it with spray cans. KCSD Det. Michael Speigle found Hodges and Joseph Deeter, who were spray painting the maroon Pontiac. The vehicle was impounded.
Hodges admitted to KCSD Det. Shane Bucher that he and Deeter traded some stolen guns and cash to Szymanski for the vehicle.
Deeter admitted to Bucher that Hodges traded some stolen guns for the stolen car. The guns and cash were allegedly stolen from Deeter’s father’s residence by Deeter, Hodges and Caleb James Jenkins.
Deeter, 20, of 966 W. CR 400N, Warsaw, was arrested and booked into Kosciusko County Jail at 4:37 p.m. Aug. 21 for burglary of a dwelling and theft of more than $50,000. His preliminary bond was set at $15,250.
Hodges, 19, of 5935 W. Osprey Drive, Mentone, faces charges of burglary, a level 4 felony; theft, a level 5 felony; and auto theft, a level 6 felony. His bond was set at $15,000 surety and $250 cash.
Jenkins, 21, of 2610 Harmony Court, Winona Lake, was arrested for burglary of a dwelling Aug. 23. His bond was set at $15,250.
