At least two teens are facing theft charges after allegedly attempting to steal a van to go buy drugs in August.

Steven James Burnworth Jr., 18, of 3169 W. Myrtle Glen Road, Silver Lake, was  booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 6:27 p.m. Friday for theft – $750 to $50,000. His preliminary bond was set at $5,250

Courtney Irene Pruitt, 19, of 404 N. High St., Silver Lake, was booked into the jail at 9:08 p.m. Friday on the same level 6 felony charge with the same bond amount.

On Aug. 25, Silver Lake Police Department officer Cody Mangun responded to a report of a man and woman looking into vehicles.

Mangun saw a green 1995 Ford Aerostar van north of the intersection of Dixie Drive and North Roosevelt Street, blocking the road and backed into a white picket fence. The driver’s window was down and the unoccupied vehicle’s backup lights were on. The Aerostar was about a block north of the complainant.

Mangun identified the owner, who said his vehicle was parked in his driveway and unknown persons got into it and drove it down the street without his permission.

Officers found the damage to the fence was less than $750.

On Sept. 7, Mangun spoke with Skylar Stahl, who said she spoke with Pruitt on Aug. 26 and Pruitt told her she attempted to take someone’s van down by the lake and hit a fence and left the area.

On Sept. 13, Mangun spoke with Pruitt, who said she was down by the lake and saw Burnworth and Stahl and they asked her if she wanted to go to Warsaw and buy some marijuana. They said Burnworth’s uncle’s van was down the road and they wrecked it and couldn’t get it started.

Burnworth gave the key to Pruitt and they walked down to the van that was backed into a fence. She got into the van and tried to start it, but was unsuccessful. Burnworth and Stahl walked away and told Pruitt that if she got it started to come pick them up.

On Oct. 15, Mangun spoke with Burnworth who admitted on Aug. 25 that Pruitt, Stahl and he were car hopping and he knew a vehicle in the area and that the owner left the keys in the ignition so they could take it and go buy methamphetamine and marijuana.

Burnworth admitted they walked to the address on Dixie Drive and Pruitt got into the driver’s seat of the van, put it into neutral and then Stahl pushed the van out of the driveway. While the van was being pushed out of the driveway, Pruitt jumped out of it, causing the van to roll into a fence, Burnworth said. He said Stahl and he left the area, and Pruitt said she was going to put the van back in the driveway.
