TERRE HAUTE – The Warsaw girls cross country team braved the mud and nearly reached its goal Saturday at the state championship meet at the Lavern Gibson Championship?Cross Country Course.

Warsaw finished 21st out of 24 teams, just shy of its goal to be in the top 20.

The race conditions were extraordinarily muddy, which considerably slowed times of even the meet’s top runners.

“Obviously conditions weren’t optimal for a race, but everybody had to race in the same thing,” said Warsaw girls coach Jason Fleming.

“Some of our kids really stepped up, and our goal was to try to crack that top 20, and (people) weren’t giving us a chance of being better than 24th.”

Freshman Wini Barnett finished 35th in 19:13, while Adree Beckham was 97th (19:58), Angie Sanchez placed 153rd (20:50), Ava Knight came in 156th (20:52), and Remi Beckham placed 167th (21:08).

Warsaw had a team score of 449, just two points behind No. 20 Columbus North.

On the boys side, Zeb Hernandez was the lone Tiger competitor.

He finished 184th in 18:13.9, having taken a fall because of course conditions.

Hernandez didn’t quit, but was slowed considerably after he picked himself up.

Warsaw boys coach Jim Mills commended Hernandez’s ability to complete the race.

“It would have been easy not to finish, and he probably could have been easily in the top 30 or 40 (without the fall),” Mills said.

Carmel won the boys race with a team score of 136, while Indianapolis Cathedral was second (146), Fishers was third (150), Fort Wayne Concordia was fourth (228), and Bloomington South placed fifth (230).

Indianapolis Cathedral’s Cole Hocker was the top overall finisher (15:25.1).

On the girls side, Carroll was first (85), Zionsville was second (149), West Lafayette was third (176), Carmel placed fourth (235), and Hamilton Southeastern placed fifth, also with 235.

Emma Greene won the race (17:53.9).

Fleming valued the meet as experience for his younger runners.

“This is something we could really build on in the future,” he said. “We know we’ve got depth now. We just gotta continue to move that pack mentality that we’ve really been instilling in the girls, (and) try to get them to move forward farther up the pack now.”
