GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A stout defensive effort propelled Grace College’s women’s basketball team to a 68-51 victory at Cornerstone on Saturday.

The Lady Lancers (1-1) held Cornerstone to 29.5 percent shooting for the game, and Grace also earned a plus-8 advantage in rebounds.

Grace had to overcome a slow shooting start on Saturday. Within the first five minutes of play, Grace had already misfired on 10 shots.

Vironnica Drake and Brooke Sugg got Grace’s scoring started, combining for nine points in the first quarter. The teams ended the first quarter tied 11-11.

The Lady Lancers began to gain separation from the Golden Eagles (0-2) in the second quarter. Brielle Wilson buried a pair of three-pointers, and Kyannah Stull hit another triple to give Grace a double-digit lead.

Grace led 32-25 at the halftime break despite shooting just 34 percent from the floor and 23 percent from beyond the arc.

Cornerstone found itself behind by at least 10 for the majority of the second half. Lauren Godfrey and Stull started the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers, putting the Lady Lancers ahead by 21.

The Golden Eagles never came closer than 17 points for the rest of the contest as Grace coasted to the road win.

Kaylie Warble produced a double-double, recording team-highs in points (13) and rebounds (11). Drake had a balanced afternoon with 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists, and Sugg added 11 points, six boards and three assists.

Stull tallied eight points, six rebounds and a career-high five steals, and Kamryn Hostetler scored seven points.

For the game Cornerstone was held to 18-of-61 shooting, which included 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from the three-point line. Grace grabbed 19 offensive boards and outrebounded Cornerstone by eight.

The Lady Lancers are back on the road Tuesday, taking on Wright State-Lake at 5:30 p.m.



Volleyball

MARION – Grace College’s volleyball team was unable to upset Indiana Wesleyan University on the road Saturday, losing in three sets.

The Lady Lancers (19-14, 11-6 Crossroads League) will finish fourth in the league standings after losing Saturday. Grace will host Taylor on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament.

Grace’s offense had one of its quietest nights of the season on Saturday. The Lady Lancers had nearly as many attack errors (24) as kills (27); Grace could only hit at a .028 percentage.

The Wildcats (21-11, 12-4 CL), on the other hand, pummeled out 39 kills at a .276 percentage.

The Lady Lancers were limited to five kills in the opening set in a 12-point loss. Grace managed to reach double-digit kills in each of the next two sets, but the team’s attack percentage never topped .100.

The Wildcats secured the sweep with 25-19, 25-16 wins in the final two sets.

No player for Grace topped 10 kills. Caylie Teel led Grace with nine kills and 10 digs. Kelsee Zuidema finished with seven kills, and Makaela Lochmueller added two kills and two solo blocks.

The Lady Lancers wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at home. Grace hosts Goshen College at 7 p.m. for Senior Night to honor the graduating class of Teel, Zuidema, Marta Bleed and Kelsey Smith.
