A Leesburg man who was sentenced Thursday for his part in a series of burglaries in Kosciusko County faces sentencing in Michigan and Ohio for similar crimes.

Kosciusko County Superior Court I Judge David Cates accepted the plea agreement for Michael Nicholas Watson, 29, and sentenced him to six years to the Department of Corrections on five counts of burglary and two years for auto theft. The terms are to be served concurrently but consecutively to his sentences in the other states.

He was given jail time credit of 658 days.

Under the plea agreement, six charges of theft were dismissed.

Per Chief Deputy Prosecutor Brad Voelz’s request, Cates gave the state 30 days to file for restitution for the victims and 30 days for the defense to respond. Watson also must pay the cost of the court action, fines and $300 to the county for the public defender.

Cates told Watson, “I hope you make better choices.”

Watson’s attorney, Scott J. Lennox, argued that Watson has accepted responsibility for his actions and he was a young man who has the opportunity to do good things in the future.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed Jan. 9, 2017, a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputy was advised on Aug. 25, 2016, that sometime between Aug. 20 to Aug. 25, 2016, unknown subjects broke into a barn and stole a utility trailer, toolbox, hand winch, spare tire, a 2007 camo Arctic Cat ATV, two chainsaws, a 2005 green Suzuki ATV and assorted hand tools totaling $13,884.04. The subjects also entered the residence and stole antique pocket watches and coins.

On Nov. 10, 2016, another deputy responded to another theft. At that residence, the deputy learned that sometime on Nov. 9, 2016, a snowmobile trailer valued at $12,000 was stolen.

During his investigation, the KCSD deputy learned of the theft of a recreational off-highway vehicle in North Webster.

Watson was one of three men suspected in the theft of the Polaris Ranger in North Webster. He later admitted he and the other men – Frank Bailey and James Matthews – did steal the UTV, and committed other burglaries.
