East Center Street Gas Station Robber Pleads Guilty

The man who robbed a gas station on East Center Street in Warsaw in January pleaded guilty Thursday to level 3 robbery.

Kosciusko County Superior Court I Judge David Cates took the guilty plea of Christopher W. Roberts, 39, under advisement and set his sentencing for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 29.

The maximum sentence for a level 3 felony is 3 to 16 years with a fine of up to $10,000, but Roberts also may be ordered to pay restitution to his victim, court costs, fees and fines.

According to a Feb. 7 probable cause affidavit, Roberts originally was charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, a level 3 felony, and theft, a level 6 felony.

Under the plea deal, the theft charge was dismissed and Roberts may not face more than 12 years incarcerated.

On Jan. 2, a Warsaw Police officer responded to a robbery at the gas station at 801 E. Center St. The cashier told him a man – later identified as Roberts – walked into the store carrying a knife and wearing a mask. Roberts told the cashier to follow his instructions or he would stab and shoot him. Roberts took more than $750 from the register drawer and the cashier’s cell phone. He then had the cashier walk in the cooler while he fled.

The cashier’s cell phone was found a few blocks from where Roberts mask was found.

On Jan. 7, police learned of an armed robbery in Wabash County where the suspect used a knife and placed the cashier in the cooler as he was leaving. Officers were able to determine Roberts committed that robbery as well. He later admitted to the Warsaw robbery.
