Gwen Mize, agriculture science and business teacher at Manchester Junior-Senior High School, has received the 2018 Helen Pouch Memorial Fund Classroom Grant of $500 from the Daughters of the American Revolution, Junior Membership Committee.
Mize was sponsored by the Frances Slocum Chapter of Wabash County.
The Helen Pouch Memorial Fund was created in 1938 with the primary goal to support education. The Junior Membership Committee established the classroom grant project with the goal of awarding a $500 grant to one classroom in each state, totaling $25,000 in grant awards each year.
To be considered for the award, a teacher for kindergarten through grade 12 must propose projects that must directly benefit students in the classroom. Funds may be used for supplies and educational programs, but the teacher must detail how these items will further the educational goals of the DAR.
The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

Singles Meeting Friends
The colder weather along with some heading south for the winter made for a skimpy gathering Wednesday.
The group will not meet next week because of Halloween. It will meet again between 6:30 and 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the upstairs deli in Martin's Super Market.
Nov. 9 is the group's game night at Martin's. Visitors are welcome to come and bring cards, dominoes and other games to play.
Agnes Pruyn Chapman DAR
Eleven members of Agnes Pruyn Chapman DAR met Tuesday at Richards Restaurant.
Member Kathy Hamman, who is also a local Realtor with ReMax, gave a program on real estate. She has been a Realtor for 17½ years and gave some selling tips to update homes. She said it’s a seller's market, with a real shortage of houses for sale. There are only 288 listings in Warsaw and Winona Lake. A lot of houses are selling within a week of listing and usually not more than a month.
Regent Kathy Gawthrop called the business meeting to order with the DAR opening rituals and read the president general's message. Paulene Holderman gave the national defense report, which was on World War II's Operation Dragoon.
Gawthrop and Millie Martin planned to attend the DAR Fall Workshop in Indianapolis on Friday.
Items for homeless veterans will be collected again in November. These will be taken to the state chairman to be distributed to homeless shelters in Indiana. The DAR also will check out giving donations to the local homeless shelter.
The next meeting will be at noon Nov. 27. Angie Briner will give a program on the 3 B Exercise Program.
Membership in Daughters of the American Revolution is open to any woman who had an ancestor who fought in or aided the patriot cause during the American Revolution. Contact Gawthrop at 574-527-2674 with any questions.
