Grace Roundup: Lady Lancers Earn Share Of League Title

The No. 24 Lady Lancers took down No. 11 Marian 1-0 in overtime on Wednesday, earning a share of the Crossroads League regular season championship.
Allison Vroon played the role of hero on Wednesday, thumping in the golden goal winner in the 98th minute to send Grace’s bench spilling onto the field in euphoria.
The winning moment came late in the first overtime period. Cassidy Wasson won possession for Grace in the attacking third of the field. Corinne Villalobos advanced with the ball to the edge of the penalty box and swung the ball out wide to Sacia Hanson.
Hanson delivered a one-time cross to a dangerous position. Vroon timed her run perfectly, blasting in her shot above the Knights’ goalkeeper to secure Grace’s first championship in program history. Villalobos and Hanson each earned an assist on the championship-clinching goal.
The regular season finale was a memorable match, despite only one goal being scored. Both sides played to their strengths well, with Grace holding the majority of possession and Marian (10-4-3, 5-2-2 CL) countering effectively.
The match started evenly as the teams tried to build an attack. Few truly threatening chances were created before halftime, however.
Grace’s first chance came from Joana Schimmel. Her low, weaving shot was parried wide by Marian’s goalie.
The Lady Lancers (16-2, 8-1 CL) also threatened in the waning seconds of the first half. Vroon sent in a cross into the box, and Flavia Faria and Cassidy Wasson both had shots at goal that were saved in the final moments.
The teams entered halftime scoreless with Grace holding a slim 7-5 shot advantage.
The second half was much of the same. Grace’s possession was hard to break, and Marian was especially dangerous when capitalizing on a Lady Lancer mistake.
Grace had two goal-scoring opportunities near the end of regulation. Hanson almost single-handedly beat a pair of Knight defenders, but her shot to the near post was saved.
Kristen Bellinger also tried a hard volley from outside the penalty box that needed a strong save.
The Lady Lancers completed a perfect 8-0 regular season home record at 1st Source Bank Field.
Grace owned a 19-14 advantage in shots for the match, including a 14-7 edge in shots on goal. Vroon, Liz Van Wormer, Faria and Bellinger each had three shots.
The Lady Lancers will enter next week’s CL Tournament as the No. 2 seed. Grace will host either Bethel or Huntington on Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals. With a win, Grace would then host the semifinals on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
Men’s Soccer
INDIANAPOLIS – The 2018 regular season ended on a high note for Grace’s men’s soccer team on Wednesday.
Marcelo Talamas netted the only goal in double overtime, lifting the Lancers (12-3-3, 6-1-2 Crossroads League) to a 1-0 win at Marian University.
Grace had already wrapped up the runner-up position in the league standings, meaning the Lancers will host the quarterfinals and potentially the semifinals of the upcoming league tournament. On Wednesday, Grace will host seventh-seed Indiana Wesleyan at 6 p.m. The semifinals will also be at Grace, if the Lancers advance, with game time likely set for 5 p.m.
Defensively, Grace primarily muted the Knights (7-8-1, 3-6 CL) on Wednesday night. Although Marian had 15 shots, only two of those were on target.
Conversely, the Lancers racked up 28 shots and 12 shots on goal over the course of the match. Grace almost doubled Marian’s attempts in the first and second halves.
The Lancers tried to jump on Marian early with five shots in the opening six minutes, primarily through the attack of Talamas and Ulisses Miranda. But Marian made three saves on those five shots to keep Grace off the scoreboard.

Grace’s offense ramped up in the second half with 15 more attempts. Grace almost scored in the beginning stages when Korry Hamlin’s shot hit the crossbar.
In the 79th minute, Talamas had a shot that glanced off the goalpost for another wasted chance. The rebounded shot attempt by Ivan Santagiuliana was blocked.
Marian managed to keep Grace off the scoreboard in regulation, however, despite absorbing heavy pressure. The Knights did not attempt a shot for the final 28 minutes of regulation.
The goal finally came midway into the second overtime. Grace won possession of the ball at midfield and quickly advanced down the left sideline.
Colin Cape passed ahead to Talamas in the center of the field, and he found Damon Binkley in space on the right edge of the penalty box. Binkley’s quick attempt was blocked, but Talamas scored on the rebounded effort as he beat the charging goalkeeper.
Talamas led all players with eight shots and five shots on goal, and Hamlin and Miranda each shot four times. Breno Oliveira tried three shot attempts with two on goal.
Kurt Hamlin registered the shutout, making two saves in 104 minutes of goalkeeping for Grace.
Women’s Basketball
SOUTH BEND – The season opener for Grace’s women’s basketball team ended in a 77-58 defeat on Wednesday at IU South Bend.
The Lady Lancers struggled with ball control and long-range shooting against the Titans (1-0). Grace committed 22 turnovers and made just 6 of 23 from beyond the arc (26 percent).
Grace’s shooting touch was particularly off in the second half, struggling to make just one 3-pointer in 13 tries.
IU South Bend led 45-34 at halftime. The Lady Lancers had 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, allowing the Titans to grab an 11-point lead at the midway mark.
Vironnica Drake (nine points) and Kyannah Stull (seven points) were Grace’s leading scorers at the break. Stull scored all seven of her points over the final 2:37 of the second quarter.
The Titans quickly built up a 20-point cushion in the third quarter, and Grace was never able to mount a serious comeback.
Drake led Grace offensively with 12 points in 17 minutes before fouling out, and Kamryn Hostetler scored 11 points with a pair of three-pointers in her first collegiate start.
Kaylie Warble just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine boards, Stull scored nine points, and Pam Miller finished with six points and six boards. Hostetler and Brielle Wilson (five points) both made their collegiate debuts for Grace on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers remain on the road Saturday, traveling to Cornerstone for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
