Man Arrested In Albertson’s Burglary Faces Charges In Two Other Cases

The man arrested for allegedly stealing about five dozen guns and ammunition from Albertson’s Sports Shop in September also faces drug and battery charges in two other cases over the past month.

Todd Henry Shumaker, 33, of 712 South Side Drive, Warsaw, is facing charges of burglary, a level 5 felony, and theft, a level 6 felony, in connection to the Albertson case, according to court documents filed Monday.

He was arrested Oct. 16 for possession of meth less than 5 grams with enhancing circumstances, possession of paraphernalia and driving while suspended with a prior. He also was arrested Oct. 11 for battery resulting in bodily injury.

On Sept. 22, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputy Shaun Mudd responded to a burglary at Albertson’s. Owner Kirk Johnson told him that sometime between the night of Sept. 21 and the morning of Sept. 22, someone entered his shop and stole approximately 60 firearms and ammunition. Mudd saw footprints and blood where the burglar had cut himself.

KCSD Det. Joshua Spangle learned that Shumaker was involved in the theft at Albertson’s. He spoke with Shumaker, who admitted he broke into the business and stole the firearms and ammunition, according to court documents. He said he sold the firearms for $3,600.

Shumaker gave consent to check his shoes, and the footprint found at Albertson’s matched Shumaker’s shoes.

Shumaker admitted he cut himself while inside the sports shop and showed Spangle the cut.

His preliminary bond in this case was set at $10,000 surety and $250 cash.

For Shumaker’s Oct. 16 arrest, court documents filed Friday list the charges as possession of methamphetamine with enhancing circumstances, a level 5 felony; possession of a syringe, a level 6 felony; driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

On Oct. 16, Warsaw Police Department officer Jacob Metzger saw a black and lime green Ford Ranger going south on North Indiana Street in Warsaw. Metzger learned the vehicle had false registration and he had prior knowledge that the vehicle belonged to Shumaker, whose Indiana driver’s license was suspended.

Metzger conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as Shumaker and the passenger as Cassandra Szymanski. Shumaker told Metzger there was a rifle behind the seat.

WPD officer Trent Shively used his K-9, Mako, who is trained to detect drugs, to do an outer air search of the vehicle and Mako made a positive alert.

Officers searched the vehicle and found digital scales with a white powdery residue, blue plastic bag that contained a white crystal-like substance, $308, a syringe, a .44 caliber Colt Henry repeating rifle, ammunition and a glass smoking device with liquid inside. All the residue tested positive for methamphetamine.

In this case, Shumaker’s bond was set at $20,000 surety and $250 cash.

For the Oct. 11 arrest, Shumaker faces charges of battery, a Class A misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor.

In that case, Shumaker got into a fight in a vehicle with his brother, Chadd Shumaker, who pulled out a bottle of pepper spray and sprayed Todd continuously until he was able to exit the vehicle. Chadd later told police Todd attacked him and punched him multiple times.

Chadd was charged with Class B misdemeanor battery for pepper spraying Todd, and Todd was charged with Class A misdemeanor battery for hitting Chadd in the face, according to court documents.
