Help Should Be Temporary

Editor, Times-Union:

After reading a few letters here in the Times-Union about the Wayne Township trustee election and speaking with a few local citizens here in my township, I decided to weigh in with my two cents’ worth.

I admit I never completely understood what all the township trustees are responsible for and what are the reasons we have them. After asking around I found that the main reason is to help people in need that have a financial emergency that arises and require some assistance paying a bill, like electricity or rent. This is supposed to be a temporary thing and not ongoing to create a dependence on the system like welfare.

Another thing they did was give money to our local ambulance provider to come get us when we have an emergency situation. However, here in Wayne township, I am told that has ended for now.

They also help the fire department with expenses and will be giving them some earmarked funds now that the new south fire station is up and running.

I am happy that the outgoing trustee has not spent every dollar they have and has been frugal or "conservative" with our funds so as to have money when the economy slows down and we have many more families in need of assistance. Those of us who have lived a few decades know that will happen eventually and the trustee better be ready for it.

I am not in favor of someone that is appalled by the fact that we have some surplus funds and should spend it on things that don't really fall under the trustee's department. I am going to cast my vote for Jeanie Stackhouse. I know her and her conservative principles will keep our local Wayne Township office solvent. I believe she will not spend every penny we have saved on pet projects that she and her liberal friends find appealing.

We built this town on conservative values and I'm afraid like our country we have lost those to the notion of "Spend it .... even if you don't have it .... logic" just to appear like you care more than the conservatives do. The truth is, showing people how to get on their own two feet is far more helpful than just giving them handouts and creating another person in constant need of assistance.
