Wawasee Edges Goshen For 1st Win, Retains WarHawk Trophy
SYRACUSE – Wawasee scored twice in the first quarter to take a 13-0 lead over visiting Goshen then, according to Warrior coach Mike Eshbach, “hung on for dear life,” to claim a 13-10 victory over the RedHawks in Northern Lakes Conference football Friday night.
Warrior quarterback Evan Eshbach, the coach’s son, had a pair of touchdown passes less than nine minutes into the game. He connected with Dylan Hepler for a 42 yard score about four minutes in, and hit Steven Hautz for a 32-yard TD at the 3:03 mark.
From there, as conditions got colder and wetter, the game became more of a grinder.
“I know it sounds crazy, but we couldn’t find a dry football. The balls became slick and after that it was a matter of who had the better running game,” the coach said.
“We sort of let them back in it, and in the third and fourth quarters it turned into a running session for both sides, which limited possessions.
“We got a couple of first downs when we really needed to, but toward the end we had to punt, and we ended up hanging on.”
Despite the cold and rain, Goshen had the only turnover, an interception, in the contest.
Quarterback Eshbach finished with 151 yards passing, completing 9 of 18 attempts. Hepler caught four passes for 74 yards, and Jesse Landeros led the Warriors with 60 yards rushing on 11 carries.
Bryant Grewe had a game-high 102 yards rushing on 19 carries for the RedHawks.
With the victory, Wawasee avoided a winless regular season and the NLC basement. The Warriors take a 1-8 record (1-6 NLC) into next week’s Class 4A sectional opener against visiting Northridge (4-5, 3-4 NLC). The Warriors fell 27-6 to the Raiders in conference play on Aug. 31.

Triton Closes Regular Season With Win
BOURBON– Triton bolted to a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised from there to a 36-20 Hoosier North Athletic Conference football win over visiting Winamac Friday night.
Senior quarterback James “Bo” Snyder hit Delano Shumpert for a 32-yard touchdown to open the scoring, and Ethan Berry added a two-yard TD run before the opening quarter was over.
Snyder ran for a one-yard TD in the second quarter before hitting Shumpert for another score, this one from 68 yards out, to stake the Trojans to a 28-point lead.
“Our kids stepped up in different areas, different players filled in and we were able to get a few big plays here and there,” Trojan head coach Ron Brown said. “The first half was really good; in the second half we let them get back in the game.”
Winamac cut into the Triton lead with a pair of touchdowns of their own to start the third quarter. Kyle Chumley scored from two yards out, then Jeb Smith caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Russell Compton to make it 28-12.
After Triton recorded a safety, the Warriors climbed to within 10 when Chumley scored from four yards out and Smith ran it in for a two-point conversion in the final period.
Hunter McIntyre’s 24-yard run to paydirt rounded out the scoring and iced the game for Triton.
Snyder finished with 162 yards passing, while McIntyre was the leading rusher with 82 yards. Shumpert had 109 yards receiving and 56 yards on the ground.
The Trojans finished the regular season at 6-3 overall and in a three-way tie for second in the conference with Knox and LaVille at 5-2. All three lost to Pioneer, LaVille beat Triton, Knox downed LaVille and the Trojans trimmed Knox 14-12 Oct. 5.
Triton opens sectional play at HNAC member Culver Community (2-7, 1-6 HNAC) on Friday. The Trojans won a home game with the Cavaliers 35-21 on Sept. 14.

Manchester Rolls Past Peru In TRC Crossover
PERU – After winning a close Three Rivers Conference football game at Peru on Sept. 7, Manchester coach Greg Miller was looking for improvement from his Squire squad in Friday’s TRC crossover rematch.
Mission accomplished.
The Squires scored eight first-half touchdowns, outgained the host Tigers 641-52 and came within a pick-six of a shutout in a 66-6 victory in the return trip to Peru.
Manchester edged Peru 34-31 in the September game, and Miller said this week he challenged his team to rewrite the story.
“I talked to the kids heading in, because the first game was a nail-biter; we ended up winning on a goal-line stand from the one-yard line. We squeaked that one out and we didn’t play very well,” Miller said.
“So we called on them and said ‘let’s go back and show ‘em how we can play. Let’s show people how we can play for four quarters and execute the way we know we can.’ We took the opening drive down and scored, and things just jelled.
“We created turnovers on the defensive side, and ended up holding them to 52 total yards. Compared to the first game, that was phenomenal.
“So it was a messy night, but to get those yards passing and control the clock, it was good for our kids.”
Manchester quarterback Devin Marcum was 11-of-18 passing for 225 yards and five touchdowns to as many receivers. Delton Moore carried the ball 24 times for 296 yards and three scores.
The 66 points is the most scored by Manchester since the Squires beat Northfield 69-0 on Oct. 16, 1998 and 66-0 on Oct. 15, 1999.
With the win, Manchester (3-6) avoids a last-place finish in the TRC. The Squires host Bluffton to open 2A Sectional 34 play. The game is a rematch of an Aug. 24 non-conference game won 36-21 by Bluffton.
