GOP Advisory Board Candidate Endorses Democrat Benyousky
By Dan [email protected]
Real estate businessman Bruce Woodward announced his support for Shari Benyousky on Saturday in a Facebook post that linked to a campaign video released last week by Benyousky’s campaign.
Benyousky faces Jeanie Stackhouse, who works in the township office as a investigative clerk, on Election Day Nov. 6.
The current trustee, Sheila Burner, chose not to seek re-election.
Woodward is one of three Republicans vying for three advisory board seats against three Democrats.
In his post, Woodward said he is backing Benyousky because the “designated” Republican choice supports “business as usual” and is not being proactive in providing services to the township.
Woodward said he’s received some indirect blowback from Republicans, but stands by the endorsement.
Woodward was one of two advisory board candidates added to the ballot by Kosciusko County Republican Chairman Mike Ragan after the primary.
Woodward said he has talked to Ragan who expressed his disappointment.
Ragan said he was disappointed because Woodward committed himself to the party when he was slated.
Benyousky said she reached out to Woodward several weeks ago.
Ragan said he believes Woodward should have reached out to Stackhouse before making a decision.
Stackhouse could not be reached for comment this morning.
Benyousky said she was “utterly pleased” with Woodward’s support, but downplayed the role of party affiliation, noting that many of the national issues that drive party politics have nothing to do with running a trustee’s office.
Asked about a crossover endorsement from Woodward, Benyousky said she’s “not at all surprised he’s willing to endorse my vision because I have a vision and plan and I don’t think Jeanie has a vision or a plan or anything at this point.”
She said she’s talked with other Republicans who are supporting her, but are wary of offering a public endorsement.
In his post, Woodward notes that Benyousky is a former Republican who chose to run against the “establishment.”
Benyousky said she had been a lifelong Republican, but voted for Barack Obama and was turned off by Donald Trump.
Benyousky’s campaign has offered to look at other services the trustee’s office could be providing and has questioned why the township has $1.2 million built up in recent years that is not earmarked for anything.
