Friends and family of Edward Dempsey are hosting a hog roast benefit on Saturday to help defray his medical treatment and living expenses.

Dempsey, 50, is battling stage 3 colon cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

At his doctor’s urging, Dempsey scheduled a colonoscopy on May 17. Dempsey and his wife, Audrey, received the diagnosis of cancer within a week, and four days later he underwent surgery. Although the surgery was successful, the cancer had spread. Delays in clarifying insurance benefits meant significant out-of-pocket expenses and forced the postponement of treatment until August.

Dempsey has been unable to work for nearly six months.

Dempsey will need 12 chemotherapy treatments and has already received seven of them. Treatments should be completed in mid-January; however, due to medications he takes for Type 2 diabetes and blood clots, the treatment schedule may have to be altered. Approximately one month after the chemotherapy treatments, he will need hernia surgery.

It could take several months following the proposed surgery before he could be cleared to return to work of any kind. He had been working as a semi mechanic and CDL driver.

The benefit is being organized by Audrey’s sister, Katie Anders. She said, “It is unbelievable how many people have come forth with offers to help, provide food, arrange for the use of the facility, and share words of encouragement. Several local businesses stepped up right away to donate auction items.”

She said, “Anyone who has been around my sister and brother-in-law know they will help anyone for any reason. We are just hoping this can help them get through this tough year.”

The benefit is being held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church gymnasium, 210 S. High St., Warsaw. The meal will consist of pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, cornbread, dessert and drink for $15 per person. There will be a silent auction and an improv performance by Main On Main Improv Group.
