Several Veterans Day Events Planned

• Center Lake Pavilion in Warsaw will host VFW Post 1126 and American Legion Post 49’s annual Veterans Day event beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. It will be coordinated with the tolling of the bell at the county courthouse at 11 a.m.
The tolling of bells is part of a national program known as “Bells of Peace: A World War I Remembrance.”
The national tolling of bells honors those who served in the Great War. This event is encouraged by the United States World War I Centennial Commission.
The ringing of the bell will coincide with the annual Veterans Day program sponsored by American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 1126 at Center Lake Pavilion in Warsaw, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
At 11 a.m., everyone at the pavilion will step outside to hear the bell toll at the courthouse.
According to records, 4.7 million American families sent their sons and daughters off to World War I, and 116,516 Americans gave their lives in the war. More than 200,000 were wounded.
Bells have been tolled as a traditional expression of honor and remembrance since 1918.
This year’s event is a way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the fighting in World War I “on the 11th month, 11th hour and 11th day.”
Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day by Congress in 1954.
Boy Scout Troop 782 of Burket will ring the bell in the dome 21 times to remember this centennial event and all Americans who have lost their lives in service to the United States of America.
The public is encouraged to take a moment of silence at 11 a.m. Sunday, or ring a bell at their church or organization if appropriate.
“World War I was called the war to end all wars,” said Ken Locke, Kosciusko Honor & Remember co-chairman.
“The sad reality is that the 20th Century was the bloodiest in history and Americans fought around the world against Imperialism, Communism, Socialism and Nazism to name a few. The bells will be rung to remember the end of the ‘Great War’ and to honor all veterans both living and who have gone on to eternity, preserving our freedom," Locke said.
• North Webster American Legion Post 253 invites the public to honor veterans Sunday. The color guard will honor all veterans with several events at different locations. Those include:
7 a.m. – The post invites veterans and their families to attend a breakfast beginning at 7 a.m.
8 a.m. – Oswego Cemetery
8 a.m. – Mock Cemetery
9 a.m. – Salem Cemetery
9 a.m. – Oak Grove Cemetery
10 a.m. – North Webster Post 253
11 a.m. – North Webster Cemetery
Noon – the North Webster Legion will have ham and beans
2 p.m. – Nine veterans from Post 253 will be presented a handmade quilt in honor of their service.
3 p.m. – entertainment with Russ Chandler
• Whitko Community Schools Corp. will host several events. All veterans are invited to attend the annual Veterans Day celebrations at Whitko Community Schools. Events include:
• 1:45 a.m. Friday at South Whitley Elementary
• 9 a.m. Monday at Pierceton Elementary
• 11:15 a.m. Monday at Whitko Jr./Sr. High School Luncheon
• 11:50 a.m. Monday at Whitko Jr./Sr. High School.
