BOURBON – This season marks five years since the Triton girls basketball team won a sectional game, but Lady Trojans coach Adam Heckaman isn’t deterred.

“We have had some down years record-wise the past few seasons, but each of the seasons we have competed against a great schedule and have been much better at the end of the season than we were at the beginning,” he said. “We will look for that same growth this season.”

Heckaman is 117-108 going into his 11th year with Triton.

The Lady Trojans went 10-13 and bowed out in their sectional opener with a 45-29 loss to Oregon-Davis last season.

Gone from that campaign are Hannah Wanemacher and Nicole Sechrist, who were Triton’s top two scorers, as well as strong defenders, rebounders and passers.

The Lady Trojans also have a void with the graduation of Charlotte Morris, a low-post threat who ate up the boards.

“They did a ton for our team the past three years, and their contributions will not replaced easily,” Heckaman said.

Looking to make up for those losses will be Whytnie Miller, Chelsea Johnson, Jaela Faulkner and Delanie Groves.

Triton’s motion offense will flow through Miller and Faulkner, who will a lot of playing time.

“We want to keep the players moving and using screens and see what we can open up for them,” Heckaman said.

Defensively, Heckaman aims to mix things up.

“We are hoping to be able to cause a few more turnovers that can lead to easy points for our offense,” he said.

It’s that aspect of the game which Heckaman expects to be strong.

“Our focus will be to control the defensive end, and work on finding our strengths on the offensive end,” he said. “With a lot of our offensive firepower graduating, we will be looking at different things early on to see who will be able to step into more of a scoring role for us this season.

“Delanie shot the ball well last year when she had the opportunity, and we will be looking for more of that this season.”

Johnson will anchor the post, and will attempt to be a vacuum for rebounding in Morris’ and Sechrist’s absence.

Triton has depths of youth, including Alyxa Viers, Abby Viers, Lexia Hostrawser, Emma Hepler, and Jaelyn Bules.

They’re players who honed their skills on JV last season, and will get their feet wet playing varsity minutes this year.

“We might have some issues with decision-making and confidence early on in the season,” Heckaman said. “As we play more games and play great competition, we will grow in those areas and hopefully that can become a strength by the end of the season.”

The Lady Trojans travel to Marshall County rival Argos Tuesday.
