NORTH JUDSON – Behold the greatest Triton High School football team in program history.

The Trojans pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback to win 29-17 at North Judson Friday in the Class 1A Sectional 41 championship game.

The victory put Triton at nine wins in a single-season for the first time in the school’s history. The Trojans had won eight games in a season five times previously since the 1960s, and captured their first sectional title since 2008.

“You could make quite the argument for that,” Brown said of the 2018 Trojans being the best Triton team yet. “Lots of great kids, a lot of talent on this team.”

A trophy and acknowledgement were the last things on the Trojans’ minds, though. Rather, they won for former Triton football player Cameron Scarberry, who died last year in an automobile accident.

Scarberry would have been a senior for the Trojans this year, and his goals by his senior year were to go 6-3 in the regular season and win a sectional championship, both of which Triton accomplished.

“I feel like that gives us some closure,” Brown said.

There was a time when it was unclear if the Trojans would be able reach Scarberry’s goal.

Triton was down 17-14 to start the fourth quarter, and North Judson was driving in Trojan territory. The Triton defense stalled the Bluejays at the 39-yard line, and a punt set up the Trojans at their own 15.

Two unproductive running plays held the Trojans at the 15 on 3rd down with 10 yards to go. That’s when James Snyder dropped back and found a diving D’Angelo Shumpert on the right side of the field for the first down.

On the next player, Snyder threw a home run ball to Shumpert, who caught it in stride on the left side of the field and ran uncontested into the end zone.

Brandon Lenker’s point-after attempt put Triton ahead 21-17 with 9:24 left in the fourth quarter.

Once again, the Bluejays marched to the 39. And once again, the Trojans stopped them, this time by catching a misdirection play that resulted in Triton senior defensive lineman Billy Smith chasing down North Judson quarter Caden Peretti.

“They were setting us up, we were able to call that play out, and Billy just lit him up,” Brown said.

The Trojans took over at their own 42, and it took just one more play to find paydirt. Snyder pitched to Delano Shumpert, who broke free down the left side of the field for the 58-yard touchdown with 4:14 left in the game.

“Everything I did was for No. 54 (Cameron Scarberry),” Shumpert said. “That’s all I played for today.”

Snyder’s two-point pass to Tye Orsund was good, and Triton held a 29-17 advantage.

North Judson never threatened after that. The Bluejays fumbled on their next drive, and the ball was recovered by Snyder.

After a Triton turnover on downs, the Bluejays’ last-ditch attempt at a score was stifled by Orsund’s interception, and the Trojans kneeled their way to victory.

“The kids did a great job,” Brown said. “They believed, they put in hard work. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The game started with North Judson playing strong up front, limiting Triton’s offense while taking a 7-0 lead on Chuckie Wilcox’s 12-yard run.

Triton got on the board on Snyder’s 24-yard strike to Orsund, and took a 14-7 lead on Snyder’s dive from one yard out.

The Bluejays drove down just before halftime and cut Triton’s lead to four points on Seth Barnett’s 33-yard field goal as time expired. They came out lively in the second half, and took a 17-14 lead on Caden Peretti’s 1-yard touchdown run.

Triton will host Class 1A No. 1 and defending state champion Pioneer Friday at 7 p.m. The Panthers won their sectional with a 70-7 victory over Lafayette Central Catholic.

The Trojans are one of three teams to have scored on Pioneer this season, losing 56-6 in Week 6.
