WINONA LAKE – The Grace College Lancers honored their No. 1 fan Friday night, and they gave him something to cheer about in a 30-point season-opening win.

On Clint Johnson Night, Grace’s men’s basketball team beat Miami University-Hamilton 105-75 behind an offensive performance that saw five players score in double figures at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The win put the Lancers in today’s 1 p.m. championship game of the Lancer Tipoff Tournament against Cincinnati Christian University, a 105-97 winner in double overtime in Friday’s first game.

Cincinnati Christian is coached by former Grace College All-American Greg Miller.

“I tried to play deep, give a lot of people looks,” said veteran Grace College coach Jim Kessler, whose squad had 12 players in the scoring column.

“It’s early, we’re trying to figure out who’s who, and what our strengths are. It’s a harder thing to figure out what combinations go together. Without Matt that changes a little bit.”

Offensive standout Matt Jennings, a sophomore, is out with a foot injury, and Kessler said he could miss the first two months of the season.

With Jennings on the bench in street clothes, his teammates picked up the slack Friday night.

Junior Charlie Warner scored 17 points in the first half, and he sophomore Haden Deaton led Grace with 19 points each.

Junior Jaret Sons had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Logan Godfrey tallied 14 points and 11 boards, and 5-foot-8 sophomore sparkplug Martin Schiele chipped in with 14 points.

“This is a team that shoots pretty good, they score well,” Kessler said of his players. “It’s a beginning for us.

“Charlie can score, you can’t let him just shoot it. He’s a very smart player. He figured out how to get to the hoop. He took more shots in the first half than he did the second. Charlie is a very clever player, we think he’s going to be a big scorer for us.”

Je’Michael Blanton led Miami University-Hamilton with a game-high 23 points, while Vinson Walker chipped in with 14 points.

No other player scored more than eight points for the Harriers.

Leading 15-8 early in the game, Grace put together a 20-6 run, pushing its advantage to 35-14.

The Lancers, who took a 56-38 lead into the intermission, maintained a 20-point lead for much of the remainder of the contest and stretched it late with Schiele’s scoring flurry.

Senior Tim Swanson, celebrating a birthday Friday, hit a three-pointer with 43 seconds left to put Grace over the century mark.

Notes: Prior to the game, the first 100 fans in line received a commemorative Clint Johnson bobblehead.

Johnson, known affectionately as “Clint Dawg”, works on the Grace College campus at the Gordon Rec Center. Johnson is a 1999 Warsaw Community High School graduate, and also a Grace alum.

At halftime, Grace Athletic Director Chad Briscoe presented a plaque to Johnson, who received a standing ovation, and talked about Johnson’s positive influence on not only those at Grace College, but also the Warsaw and Winona Lake community.

“Clint has very unusual intellectual skills ... he knows everybody,” Kessler said with a smile. “He works in the rec center, and he doesn’t just greet you with ‘how are you Mr. Smith?’ It’s ‘Mr. Smith, how’s your wife, how’s your daughter, how’s your dog?’

“He’s always encouraging everyone, and he genuinely cares about everyone. He’s perfect for the job he has at the rec center. He’s just a very special fan. He loves everyone on campus and in this community, and people love him back.”
