Krebs, Warsaw Lady Tigers Ready For Round 2

The veteran girls basketball coach, who spent the previous 14 seasons at fellow Northern Lakes Conference school Goshen, says things are a lot clearer heading into the 2018-19 campaign.
Season 2 with Krebs opens Saturday night when the Lady Tigers travel to Ossian to play Norwell, and all indications are the coaching staff and players bonded more in the offseason and are ahead of where they were at this time last year.
“I’m trying to remember last year, it was a blur,” said Krebs, whose Lady Tigers were 15-9 overall and 5-2 in the NLC in his first season at the helm of the tradition-rich program. “Moving, new school, new team ... it was a fun year, but it was a blur.
“This year we’re much more settled in, we’re much more relaxed. The girls know what to expect from me, and I know the girls. That was a big thing last year, we were learning each other. I was learning who each individual was, their strengths, their weaknesses.
“We had a great offseason, just getting to know each other. We’re so much farther ahead than where we were last year. We’ve got our offenses put in, we’ve got our defenses put in. Not that I’m content where we’re at, but I’m happy.”
Warsaw’s 12-player varsity roster is made up of seniors Maddie Ryman and Halle Shipp, juniors Brielle Harrison, Kaylee Patton and Grayson Kilburn, sophomores Brooklyn Fitzgerald, Kensie Ryman, Kendall Wayne and Audrey Grimm, and freshmen Abby Sanner, Mackenzie Sokol and Kacilyn Krebs.
The Lady Tigers return three starters in Maddie Ryman, Patton and Harrison.
Emma Bohnenkamper started all 24 games last season and was lost to graduation. Kacy Bragg, headed to Taylor University on a volleyball scholarship, started 24 games last year as a junior and chose not to play basketball.
“I think we’re gonna be a year wiser, a year more mature at some key positions,” said Krebs. “Maddie Ryman’s back, so are Kaylee Patton and Brielle Harrison.
“We’ve got some key kids back who last year was their first real go-around. Those three especially have been great leaders for us. We’re much more experienced in that aspect. Our younger kids are really looking to those three for their leadership, and they’ve stepped up.”
Maddie Ryman led the Lady Tigers in scoring last season with 10 points per game
Patton averaged seven points and nearly four boards a game.
Harrison chipped in with five points and nearly six rebounds per contest.
Kenzie Ryman, Wayne and Grimm have moved up to the varsity level after helping the JV squad to a 15-7 record last season.
Kacilyn Krebs has grown up in the sport and her father/coach likes her high basketball IQ.
At 6-foot-1, Sanner brings some size to the mix.
Outside of Sanner, Warsaw’s roster has two girls listed as taller than 5-8 – Harrison and Patton, both of whom are 5-9.
“We’ve got kids from a JV squad who won 15 games last year. Four freshmen started for them, we’ve got those kids coming up,” said Krebs.
“In addition to that, we’ve got a nice freshman class that didn’t lose many games, if any games, in middle school. There’s a lot of talent for some competition for spots, which there should be at a school this size. We should have some competition for some playing time.
“Are we gonna win 15 games? I?can’t tell you how many games we’re gonna win. We’re gonna take the approach that we want to be better today than we were yesterday, and the wins and losses will take care of themselves. I would like to think we’re not going to lose games because of inexperience this year. Last year I felt like we lost a couple just because we weren’t quite experienced and ready for that moment. Hopefully those games flip and go in our favor this year.”
The Lady Tigers play three of their first four games on the road.
Following Saturday’s game at Norwell, Warsaw plays at Manchester Wednesday, hosts Tippecanoe Valley Friday and travels to Wabash Nov. 14.
The Lady Tigers open NLC play Dec. 8 wen they host Plymouth.
The last month of the regular season also has Warsaw hitting the road, as the Lady Tigers will play five of their final six games away from the Tiger Den.
