On Aug. 13, North Webster Police Department officer David May responded to a report of a counterfeit bill used at a hardware store. The store manager told May that on Aug. 12 a man used a counterfeit $50 bill. The manager gave the bill to May, who saw the bill was a $10 bill made to appear as a $50 bill.
The manager provided May with the transaction receipt for two cans of spray paint paid for with the counterfeit $50 bill; the subject received $32.90 in change. May also was given security video of the transaction, which showed the man leaving in a 2000 maroon Oldsmobile.
On Aug. 21, May conducted a traffic stop on the Oldsmobile. He questioned the female driver about being at the hardware store on Aug. 13. She said she was there with Gasaway. She identified him in a photo taken from the security video.
May asked for Gasaway’s phone number and what he had purchased at Ace, never mentioning the counterfeit bill to her.
While May was speaking to Gasaway on the phone, he said the woman came to his home and discussed the incident with him. He said she told him that May had shown her a photograph of him and that he was seen using a counterfeit $50 bill.
