In the last Northern Lakes Conference regular season match of the year, the Warriors defeated NLC-leading Warsaw by one stroke on Thursday night.
Wawasee shot a 168, the Tigers carded a 169 and Goshen fired a 184 to round out the competition.
It was a tale of two different stories at South Shore Golf Club. The Warriors shot their best nine-hole score of the year and Warsaw shot its worst just two days after the team shot its best, a 146 at Stonehenge.
“We’re really happy to get the win,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “Maybe Warsaw was overlooking us a little bit, we don’t know, but we played well.”
The loss moves the Tigers to 6-1 in the conference and Wawasee is now 4-3.
Warsaw is hoping the loss provides motivation going into Saturday’s conference tournament at Stonehenge. Coach Rich Haddad expects it to be very motivational for the team and is interested to see how the team interacts with one another moving forward.
The course caused havoc for Warsaw Thursday, despite the near-perfect weather conditions.
Match medalist Luke Delp, who shot a 38 for the Tigers, had trouble on a couple holes where he had two double bogeys. Delp was able to help himself out by shooting par or better on the other seven holes.
On hole No. 3, Warsaw had three golfers shoot either an eight, or nine on the par 5.
Besides Delp, only one other golfer made par on five holes. Sam Yeager accomplished the feat and shot a 42. He made par on five of the first six holes, but was 5-over on the last three holes.
“When you have a bad day in golf, its a gut check,” Haddad said. “You have to stop and go, ‘are there things that really caused this bad round for me or is it just one of those golf days where nothing works?’ You have to let it go as fast as possible.”
Wawasee wasn’t able to cruise past that hole either and had two golfers combine for a 17 on the hole.
For the Warriors, Dillon Drake tied for second with a 39 and Zach Leedy followed closely with a 41. Jared Krugman (43), Victor Tayagua (45) and Evan Dippon (52) rounded out the golfers for Wawasee.
Goshen was led by Peyton Cripe, who fired a 39.
All three teams with meet up again on Saturday in the NLC Championships at Stonehenge Golf Club, beginning at 9 a.m.
Warsaw is now in a first-place tie with NorthWood and knows winning the overall conference championship may require winning Saturday. “Our position has weakened for sure,” Haddad said. “But the reality is, we have to go out Saturday and prove that we’re the best team in the conference.”
The Warriors are taking this in stride and are going to use it as a confidence booster when they step onto the course Saturday. They now know they can compete with the top-tier schools in the conference and that they’re capable of winning big matches.
Wawasee celebrated the careers of two seniors before the match, Hunter Hlutke and Jake Cowan.
“They have meant everything to the program,” Coverstone said. “They have great attitudes and have been good leaders. They haven’t played as much varsity as maybe they would have wanted to, but I’m really happy they’re on the team.”
