Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers

The annual Spring Fling for Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers was May 16. It was hosted by Tippecanoe Township at the Shepherd by the Lakes Lutheran Church, Syracuse. Musical entertainment was provided by the Extension Chorus, directed by Dan Beam.

Club members brought in many donations for Healthy Families. The group enjoyed an educational demonstration on plants and flowers given by Mary's Market Gardens. Several club members also brought in entries for cultural arts and items that had been recycled into other useful articles.

The Indiana Extension Homemakers Association is supported by Purdue University to help promote education, leadership development and community support. Membership is open to anyone. For more information, call the Purdue Extension office at 574-372-2340.



Kosciusko County Retired Teachers

The Kosciusko County Retired Teachers met May 8 at Miller’s Senior Living Center for their first business meeting and program of the year.

Sandra Kunce welcomed new members Deloris Robert, John Roberts and Evelyn Marsh, as well as guest Roger Bowers. Dorothy Sweeney provided music.

Following lunch, Jill Beeler Introduced Sally Williams, who shared information from AMBA concerning IRTA membership savings and benefits for the group. Kathy Workman presented the program on the WOW (Winning Over Widowhood) support group in the community. WOW partners with widows to help with grief and independence, and to provide a social ministry in small groups.

Anyone interested in going to the state meeting on June 13 should submit their name to Sandra or Jill.

Members were reminded to keep track of their volunteer hours for the year.

The co-vice president’s position is open.

Door prizes were won by Evelyn Marsh, Ann Chubb and Alice Schilling. Rosemary Laughlin won the gift card from AMBA.



Winona Literary Club

WINONA LAKE — The Winona Literary Club met May 16 at the Robin Hood Community Building for its annual spring  luncheon. Two guests joined 32 members for the luncheon.

LaNita French and Mary Parr entertained the group with  several piano duets with a star theme.

Member Marcia South told the group of her and husband Don’s mission trip to Spain.

Incoming president Paula Ibach gave information on the committees for next year, beginning in September. The theme will be “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.”

The group will meet next in September.



Kosciusko Kettleheads Homebrew Club

The Kosciusko Kettleheads Homebrew Club will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mad Anthony's Lake City Taphouse in Warsaw.

Those interested in the fine art of fermentation are invited to attend, and all current, former or potential brewers are welcome. For further information call 574-265-4837, visit www.kettleheads.org or email [email protected].

The Kettleheads meet the second Sunday of every month.



Singles Meeting Friends

Seven people gathered Wednesday for an evening of games and discussion. Topics included upcoming concerts at Central Park in Warsaw.

At game night May 11, Char, Gerald, Susanne, Donna, Mickie and Chris visited to catch up on Arizona winter travelers. Some played ponytail canasta and others watched to learn.

The group meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Martin’s Super Market, Warsaw.

Frances Slocum Chapter DAR

The Frances Slocum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met May 8 at the Grandstaff-Hentgen Activity Room, Wabash.

The national defender report honored the May 1 ceremony at West Point rededicating the legacy of Revolutionary War heroine Margaret “Caption Molly” Corbin. Corbin was one of the first women to serve in battle in defense of the nation as she took over her husband’s cannon when he was mortally wounded during the Battle of Fort Washington in what is now Fort Tyron Park in Manhattan. She was severely wounded during the battle and taken prisoner before being paroled and eventually assigned to the West Point Corps of Invalids.

 The Indian committee minute report was on the Choctaw Indian language system of communication during World War I.

The club heard an account from Robert Bohn’s experience on the April 25 Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. The chapter remembered the death of member Sue W. Potter, Wabash.

For the program, members shared about their ancestor patriot or a new ancestor they were working on.

The next meeting will be  at 11:30 a.m. June 9 at the Main View Inn, 141 E. Main St., North Manchester. Prospective members and guests are welcome to attend.

NORTH WEBSTER – Bridge results from the Senior Prime Enrichment Center this week are:

May 15 – Mike Wyrick, first; and Jerry Hetrick, second.

May 17 – Dick Sutton, first; and Wyrick, second.

Four Seasons Ladies Bridge

WINONA LAKE – Four Seasons Ladies Bridge met Wednesday at Grace Village, with Dian Cartwright as hostess.

Winners were Beth Huffer, Cartwright and Nanette Newland.



Wednesday Night Bridge

WINONA LAKE – Four tables of bridge players convened May 16 at Grace Village with Janet Wagley as hostess.

Winners were: first, Dorothy Herring; second, Kathy Cleary; third, Mike Herring; and fourth, Grant Magner and Joan Kizer.

The group plays at 6 p.m. Wednesdays. New players are welcome.
